One of the fun things that happens as a frequent traveller is that friends come to us with fairly interesting travel conundrums. MOst I can handle but this immigration one I'd like to gain some experience from more knowledgeable travelers.

The 12 year old daughter of some new Australians has a long validity on her HKsar passport. She has three months to run on her current Australian passport. Her and her family live in Australia. The daughter last entered Australia on her Australian passport. No entry stamp or Au visa in the HKsar passport.

The family will fly out to HK on 10 Jan, returning 24 Jan, well within the validity of the daughter's Au passport.

Are there any likely issues with this?

My thoughts are:

a) Airline: Needs to determine that the person they carry can enter HK. This is possible as daughter will enter HK on HKsar.

b) Australia Immigration going out: No issues, the daughter exits on Au passport.

c) Entering HK: No issue, enter on HKsar

d) Returning home: Enter on Au passport....2 months to spare before expiry.

Does anyone have direct experience with this kind of issue?

Why not use HK passport to exit Australia? She is a citizen of both so it shouldn't matter which is used. My daughter is dual HK/AU and the limited advice I've been given is that it doesn't matter which because she will have ROA in both countries.

If she uses her HK passport to exit AUS wouldn't immigration want to see her Australian passport to know how she got in?

I think all should be OK.

Airline check-in will take any passport that's valid for entry at the destination. A passport only needs to be valid (just 1 day is enough) when entering the country that issued it. It's the other passports that might need a visa or a minimum length of validity.

If you are Australian and try to leave Australia on another passport it will cause an event at passport control. I've done it, but I needed to go to an interview room and explain why I wasn't using my Australian passport. I had a good reason and was allowed out. :)

I understood that you were obliged to exit Australia on your Australian passport if you have one

I have managed to exit with another passport. But I had to explain why. In my case it was because my Australian passport had not yet been returned from an embassy where I was obtaining a visa. I was allowed to leave. And my Australian passport (complete with the visa) was later sent by registered post to me while I was still abroad - so I returned back to Australia with it.

No issues with your thoughts at all. A HK ID card or HKSAR passport at check in is sufficient to prove right of entry to HK.

Give AU Customs the Aussie passport when you both depart and arrive from Ausralia. Give HK Customs the HK SAR passport on arrival and departure.

The info below from Expert Flyer states than AU passports need only be valid for one month on arrival in HKG so even if she entered HK on her AU passport (& didn't even hold HK SAR residence) she would be okay provided she still had at least one month validity of the AU passport

The HK SAR passport just has to be valid as there is no min validity required when you hold a passport for the same country you are entering in this case HKG.

The timatic passport/visa enquiry this time I added the fact the the AU passport holder had HK SAR residence so there is no longer the requirement that the AU passport needs at least one month validity - it just has to be valid.

That should be fine. I am dual HK/Australian citizen and there has been no problems. Since she is 12, she should have HK Children ID card (age 11-17):

Leaving oz: Australian passport
enter HK: HK Children ID card
leaving HK: HK Children ID card
Entering oz: Australian passport (the customs would tell you that your passport is expiring but there is no way they won't let you in).

Now I strongly suggest she get Mainland Travel Permit as well if not already done so. Visa free travel in China for 10 years for each issue.

香港中國旅行社–港澳居民來往內地通行證

I have one myself.

I think it should be okay but best to ask Australian passport office

Ozbeachbabe is that a standard expertflyer functionality? I haven't seen it before.

I pay the annual $99.00 subscription so not sure if Timatic info comes with the free version. Have a look at the index on the home page on the left hand side of the page. I can see the following topics:

Awards & upgrades
Flight availability
Flight timetables
Flight status
Flight details
Seat Map
Fare information
Travel information

When you select 'travel information' you then get several tabs with options to click and I select the last one 'visas health & passport.'

The validity required on an Australian Passport to enter HKG has nothing to do with the AU P/P office as it's up to immigration at the destination country. All Australia CBP care is that your passport is valid to depart Australia. It's up to the airline checkin staff to ensure you have the required validity on your AU passport or another document such as the HK SAR resident card that will allow you entry into HKG.
