DSE - stores to close and chain to be sold

Hopefully they will expand EDR to masters and dan murphys and other Woolworths businesses, to keep it as an attractive proposition. Having it limited to big w and Woolworths isn't going to coerce people to buying at Woolworths group businesses.

I just bought a new laptop with 2 year extended warranty. The chain needs to stay around in case I need to claim on it

There was another thread that said the Master will very likely never have EDR's due to it's ownership structure....

Dan Murphy's - It was also mentioned that they are more interested in discounts than EDR's points...

It's all about groceries and the ongoing "price wars" between Woolies and Coles

The number of people that wait in a long line at petrol stations for their 4/8c discounts will continue!

Whilst I am sure some people get points through Dick Smith, I think the vast majority of points earned will be through Woolworths supermarkets. Then to a lesser extent Big W. So don't think most point earners or Woolworths will change what they do now.
As lovestotravel has said little chance of Masters and Dan Murphys being included.

Don’t forget BWS for places where you can’t but liquor with your groceries.

I’m not entirely convinced on the Dan Murphy’s discounts over points idea, as I’ve frequently seen beer slabs and other items there that have been more expensive than BWS. That said, I know the core of that business is spirits and wine, but it’s not always cheaper!

As for DSE, well it was always a bit expensive and the fact you had to spend $50 instead of $30 always put me off. Probably doesn’t help WW that D¡ck Smith keeps going on TV and saying all sorts ;)

That said, I wonder why they don’t aim for a store within a store concept and place DSE inside Big W’s, giving Big W a bigger electronics range.

While I may not earn as many points from DSE as I do from Woollies, I certainly have bought things specifically from DSE instead of other places purely based on the EDR relationship and ability to earn FF points. So their association with EDR has probably resulted in my spending upwards of $4000 with them (laptop computer, GPS, iPod docks, etc), without taking into account the Amex promo purchasing Wish cards through DSE.

Just one more reason not to buy an extended warranty. Although it is often managed by an external company so perhaps not dependent on DSE.

I love the comments on no news, by people saying they did not realise the chain was no longer run my Mr Smith (he sold it 30 years ago).

The bed was made when they purchased Tandy.....& pushed on with hundreds & hundreds of store re-fits.

Big W are having their own problems with like for like sales diving something like 3% & falling faster in the current qtr:shock:

Shame as I quite like DSE. Like others I have modified my spending since EDR was introduced so if it goes, I guess I will be free to shop elsewhere.

Were the iPod docks and GPS unit not available at Big W when you looked, as I generally use Big W for my iPod-related purchases, thanks to the lower threshold for earning points than DSE!

A quote from the official Woolworths Press release.

Mr O’Brien said consumer electronics is an important category for Woolworths’ customers, and the company intends to continue its growth in this category via the BIG W business.

Interesting they plan to close 100 Woolies stores, as they are continuing to roll them out!

I suspect areas where Aldi has taken a big slice of their business will be the ones to close..........

Good old Dick Smith putting his comments out there........... Funny how all the DSE branded products are not made in Australia at the moment.................

Dick Smith fears the stores he founded will be sold offshore | Herald Sun

AUSTRALIAN entrepreneur Dick Smith fears the electronics chain he founded could be sold to foreign owners by retail giant Woolworths. Woolworths, which owns the electrical retailer, has declared that up to 100 stores will close over the next two years.
Mr Smith said Woolworths' decision was a sign Australia was moving closer to the point when everything will be foreign owned.
The "Buy Australian" campaigner believed the local market was not big enough to provide sustained profits for companies in an increasingly globalised world.
"When you want endless growth only the biggest survive," Mr Smith said today.
"Little Australia won't have any ownership at all."
Despite his opposition to the sale of Australian companies offshore, he said he did not see there would be any alternative.

They may well have been. But with the Amex promo it was just easier to buy from DSE. And BigW does not necessarily have the same specials as DSE. He GPS was a Christmas Present for my son and was most certainly on sale at DSE for a god price at the time. I doubt BigW sold the actual iPod doc model I purchased as it took considerable searching to find all the right features.

To be honest, DSE is overpriced for most things, thus the potential for earning decent points is hard considering you need to spend at least 50 dollars. Unless you find some high price item on sale, as most of the cheaper items can be sourced at other stores or online. No wonder Woolworths wants to get rid of DSE!

First time I had ever shopped there, spent $308 so it was a worthwhile points expedition - if they ever credit.
