As I quite often find myself doing I was looking through the QF DRW timetables for my trips next year and spotted QF1889 (which until the end of October was the DRW-CNS flight number and is now CNS-BNE) from DRW to BNE in addition to the daily QF825 and thought oh great an additional service, however after looking at the arrival times I’ve been left a bit confused.

Upon closer inspection the flight has one stop in Cairns, no problems there but still takes a timetabled 12:35. DRW-CNS is 2:30 landing at 0945 local time before continuing to BNE at 1740 leaving 7:55 on the ground. This service operates one way (there is no QF1888) and I assume it will be different aircraft and crew operating each sector as there is a CNS-DRW flight at 1030 operating as QF1980 which the crew and a/c will likely operate back. Both individual legs as well as the full length flight are bookable.

Whilst by no means revolutionary I still found it interesting that they have chosen to schedule this as a “direct,” flight rather then just two seperate flights or if keep it as a direct service why not attach it to an earlier CNS-BNE service. This also would make it, to my knowledge QF’s longest stopover for a flight. Is there alot of demand for one way Cairns day trips? I’m sure there is a reason but it’s obviously above my pay grade.
