I found an amazing fare on Malaysian Air website - DEL-KUL-MEL(MH)-PER(QF) for around $1000 (AUD) in business. Now if I only really want to go to MEL - can I just ditch the last segment when I arrive in MEL either by not re-checking my luggage after immigrations and customs or only checking my bags as far as MEL (assuming Malaysian allow this). Once in MEL I could advise QF that I won't be boarding the flight to PER.

The fare DEL-MEL only is more like $2000.

You would have to collect your bags in Melbourne for inspection and then rebook them on to the domestic flight anyway. I have known of people who became unwell after arrival into Melbourne and could not fly on the next sector.

Thanks that what I thought - but it would be best to advise QF that I won't be taking the MEL-PER flight I presume.

Why? People miss flights ALL THE TIME. Its only if your luggage is onboard that they need to care about it.
Sometimes it can trigger a loadsheet/LIR reissue. They should know your bag never made it on, even though it will probably be in the system. Couple of keystrokes, some kind arithmetic from the crew up the front (or back to w&b and a couple of new sheets of paper). Happens all day every day.

Book the MEL-PER to be the next day but under 24 hours after your arrival into MEL. Cleanest way to do it.

Pushing "the envelope" is fun, but don't cry if things don't work out :)
