Hi
Quick question for the guru's
Im planning to come home for a visit, and my return flight is at 12,000 miles. (Nice SYD-NRT-DFW-ATL flight)
Question is if I add a OOL-SYD flight, (Which will cost me nothing as I am at the max miles anyway) can I just cancel this flight and continue on my merry way, without effecting the rest of the award flight...

I dont expect any type of refund, just to still have a valid ticket to get home (US) from SYD.

idea's???

Thanks as always
Rob

I'm a bit confused by this

Why would you add an OOL-SYD flight if you plan to not fly it? If you did book the journey to be OOL-SYD-USA and you did not fly the OOL-SYD sector , it would almost certainly affect ( rather than effect ) the remainder of the booking

Hi Dave
Reason is, I have a month back in OZ and if time persists was going to spend some time on the GC, then fly back from there. Problem is, I dont know if I am going to have time to get up there. (Work commitments)
Basically trying to save a $100 bucks on the return flight if I go up, but not create bigger problems if I need to cancel it.

Rob

if i understand you correctly ...

why wouldn't you outlay the 100 for a return ticket. if you don't use it then it won't affect your award ticket, and that is likely to be cheaper than trying to get changes to your award ticket.

i hope i have understood you correctly.

Robert, if you decide not to take OOL-SYD then you have to pay a 5000 point penalty for ticket reissue.

You cannot simply "not turn up" as this would result in the cancellation of all remaining flights.

I was hoping I could just cancel the OOL-SYD segment, without penalty and without a ticket re-issue. Which obviously isnt going to be the case.

Thanks again for all the replies.

5,000 will apply, no doubt.

further to this and a possible benifit...

all your taxes and charges get reassessed as well. it should mean money back in your pocket. losing a domestic sector will get you approx aud45.00 in a refund.

this refund is on the proviso that fuel surcharges haven't gone up since you initially booked or the aussie dollar hasn't tanked back to banana republic status.

Thanks to all replies again.

I think fate has delivered me the answer. When I booked the LAX-SYD flight, the X1 had disappeared. So now have a LAX-BNE-SYD. The BNE-SYD is on domestic. (Should be happy I got a FF seat from ATL- Australia 5 days out )
Anyway, if needed, I can skip on the BNE-SYD flight. I have booked 2 one way awards, so if I cancel the final part of the inbound, it wont affect my outbound flight. (Which was the problem, as it was the first flight of the outbound)

Could go either way if QF will charge me the 5000 points as its not going to be a ticket reissue. Anyway, I am a very good negotiator in these instances, I think I will get away with it..
(Got the US agent to capture my complete FF booking while I was on the phone and add on a ATL-DFW portion to the award without paying a penalty, 2,500 booking fee or extra points and she did it 2x)

We will see.

Sorry to bump an old topic but thought I'd give an update on what happened with my trip....

I did end up finishing at BNE without taking the final BNE-SYD trip. Problem was, in my excitement being back on Aus soil I left the airport and didn't tell QF agent, thinking I could just do it on the phone.

Well, When I rang QF reservations to tell them I wasn't going to take the SYD-BNE flight, the agent "Lost it" on the phone. He basically told me that I could be arrested by Customs and blah, blah. This went on for about 10 minutes. We left the conversation with him telling me that I had to take the flight. (Even know I told him I was on the GC and it impossible for me to do that)

I decided to go to the GC airport and talk to a QF agent. Well 2 seconds later, he unloaded me from the flight and I left.

At this stage QF haven't taken the 5000 points for a ticket re-issue, because I missed the final segment. Also no news about a small refund of taxes, which I really don't expect.

Rob

I did feel silly for not advising QF staff at BNE before leaving the airport, I put it down to the 27 hour delusion you get from flying too long.

I can't see why you would bother telling them that you were not going to get on the last segment tbh

Dave

Yeh, looking back, I shouldnt have.
But was trying to do the right thing.....

Anyway......

Are you sure the QF agent who you spoke to on the phone wasn't talking through the backsides with regards to the customs? Surely you went through the customs at BNE to get out of the airport, so you couldn't have been of any interest to the customs whatsoever. I don't understand why the QF agent even went mad at you for not telling them at the airport about not doing BNE-SYD. People do no-shows etc all the time. It sounds to me that you just had a grumpy one?
