Obviously things are a little up in the air at the moment, but we have a trip planned to the Townsville area for late July, early Aug. First up we are visiting Magnetic Island ( have read a couple of handy trip reports) and then have a hire car for 2 weeks. Any general tips for things to see in the area of the rough map outline we have ?

Should be lovely weather then. 2 weeks...maybe extend up to Cooktown (via inland) for a day or 2?

Ron has spent several months in Townsville working at the hospital over the last 10 years. The last time we were there they were still building the huge sports stadium in town. But a couple of restaurants that have been consistently good are the Cowboys Club, GYO Japanese, and Wild Rice. Best fish and chips is takeaway from Tobins *****

Wild Rice Laos & Thai Cuisine upstairs - 235 Flinders St Townsville. (1 block past the Cowboys Club)
GYO Japanese 48 Gregory Street - you need to book - or else you cant get in !
Tobins Fish Tales - 1 Rose St , Townsville, Fish and Chips | Tobin Fish Tales | North Ward

Townsville is beautiful at this time of year.Plenty of walks and a great time to do them.
The area around the Town Common is very good especially if you like birds.

Naturally a trip report.Town Common on page 7 magnetic Island also on there-2 visits.

PS a years membership at the Cowboys club for over 55s is $6.60.Get 10% of food and wine so I saved that in the first visit.

Have those in the spreadsheet. Thinking Milla Milla while in Atherton for the 3 days. Planning Paronella Park on the way to Mission Beach.

Thank you. Have got good info out of your reports and the one by bpeteb. Have booked Magnetic Blue Waterfront on the island and our first night in Townsville is a home game for the Cowboys so we are going to the footy

If you have dinner at the Cowboys before a game - it is always a busy night there when a match is on !! You will need to book.
It is a 5 minute walk to the stadium.

The Townsville footy fans are something else.I was lucky and got to see the football JT play his last game with the Cowboys at their old stadium.

Looking forward to the new stadium. Game is Sat night after Origin 3 so guessing there might be a few missing

If you are at Mt Surprise you may as well do Undara Lava Tubes...all bitumen. Make sure you book tours in advance...very busy up here.
I assume you have "done" Cairns...plenty of waterfalls etc on the tablelands.
Pack your patience for the crowds of caravanners and roadworks holding you up...

Thanks for the insight. Booked in to a morning tour. We are staying at Bedrock Village Caravan Park. Think we have allowed ourselves plenty of time so no hurry by us

I put some pix up in the Top 3 Holidays Photo thread last month...there is also Cobbold and Copperfield Gorge a bit further west...but best in a 4wd for them.
Also Tallaroo Hot Springs just opened...only self caravan and camping currently but you can visit for the day same as the others. I havent been there but it seems there is a boardwalk visiting the springs and also private soaking pools you pay for...you can use the ones in the creek at Innot Hot Springs for free.

Might look to Saunders Beach for lunch for the last day

Looks like Alligators Nest would be around a half hour drive from Mission Beach? Too cool to swim in late July?

For locals yes...

Dont believe the no crocs in freshwater BS...chances are low of an attack but they are in any of the deeper pools up here.

Cardwell Spa Pools are a popular instagram spot now as well.
