Does CX get viability to what status you are even if you aren't flying a codeshare / QF flight?

All oneworld carriers do if you have the FF number in the booking.

Anecdotal reports that a lot of QF WPs get upgraded to J on Aus-HK routes.

I'm on PVG-HKG soon and chances normally aren't great but FlightStats is showing as Y0 J8 for all the morning flights, so I might get lucky!

My one and only flight with Dragonair scored me an UPG MNL to HKG when I was a PS a couple of years ago...I was a single traveler, whether that made a difference in my case, but different to the OP case. I enjoyed the flight, for obvious reasons...except the bus ride at the end!
