Interesting read today in the SMH about the deaths of quite a few people who stayed at the Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai, I am not sure how the local governor can see it as a coincidence:

It's taken the lives of seven tourists, all of whom fell ill from a mystery illness in Chiang Mai, Thailand this year.
Now two young New Zealanders have spoken out for the first time about their harrowing story of falling sick at Chiang Mai's Downtown Inn hotel with the illness that killed their friend Sarah Carter.
Emma Langlands and Amanda Eliason, both 23, shared their story on the website thailandtraveltragedies.com, set up by Miss Carter's father Richard, who believed Thai authorities "covered up" details relating to his daughter's death.

Does not look good at all. Initial glance to the topic I thought it was HI Chiang Mai which has the problems.

I can see how a co-incidence could have occurred, and it is possible that the hotel has nothing wrong with it.

But it is very strange.

know it is not mentioned directly but it would appear that the accusation is that someone at Downtown Inn is somehow putting toxins or poisons in the rooms. But how? Via the air-conditioning? Dirnking water?

If related to the hotel itself, poor hygiene practices, bacteria in rooms (maybe through air-con, maybe through other ways - shower water?) could be the cause.

I note there has been a follow up report that indicates its being taken seriously rather than as just a coincidence:

Mr Panadda said Thai police were to launch their own investigation into the deaths, adding that the incident had damaged the image of Chiang Mai as a tourist destination.
The Chiang Mai Public Health Office this week met with foreign diplomats and consulates from affected embassies, as well as medical staff, to share the outcome of the investigation.
Test samples have been sent to the US-based Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta as well as Osaka University in Japan for examination.
“I think we are halfway now,'' Dr Surasing said, with investigations likely to be concluded in two months before a final report.
A spokesperson for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the New Zealand government was “actively encouraging the Thai authorities to progress the investigation into Sarah Carter's tragic death''.
