Downsized Traveller

Going HLO, posting my suit home after a wedding in Ireland (buying a cheap pair of shoes in Dunns and then charity binning them) before cycling Dubrovnik Sarajevo. The outbound airline is fine with carryon bag and suit bag.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I joined earlier this year and have since travelled to the USA, England, Scotland and Germany. Last time I travelled with my wife and it was a mix of business and pleasure. We had two large suitcases and a work case checked as well as hand luggage. It was a pain arguing at nearly every about our luggage allowance! Not to mention lugging it around. Some of the old places we stayed in Scotland had narrow stair cases and no lift. So you wonder why I call myself a Sherpa..

I am now heading back to the US fro three weeks and taking carry on only. Some of you may laugh but I feel free already!

I welcome any tips you may have!
you're less likely to have your bags lost, and the chances of being shifted onto earlier/later flights vastly improves if you don't have bags that also need to be shifted about.

We have discussed the sizes of bags but I think I only saw one mention of the liquids and paste issue regarding toothpaste. As a mostly HLO traveller I have a source of small tubes of toothpaste but haven't seen them in supermarkets or pharmacies, even as a give-away. How do others manage?

The supermarkets generally have 110g so too big. Some larger supermarkets have a travel section with small items.

The QF F lounge has Colgate tubes in a useful size that lasts about a month.

Finally, some discount stores (Dollar Shop, Cheap as Chips etc) have 90g toothpaste from time to time.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about the small tubes in the Qantas showers of which I have a few. I'm sure they don't last a month of constant use. Are we talking about the same product? I've just done some research and you can get a Colgate travel essentials pack with 40g toothpaste, mouthwash, toothbrush and floss almost anywhere. Toothpaste on it's own is usually on-line but I see Target are selling some. I should have looked sooner, but I have a stash of free samples anyway.

Ask your dentist - they usually have sample sizes of various brands of toothpaste.
That's where I got my current supply, but running out. Dentist has changed and I haven't seen any recently.
