As some here know, I am a recent convert to iPhone. One of my frustrations is the loss of one of favourite ringtones "Flight LH ..." (I think it was 497). My hairdresser thinks I should be able to download from YouTube but I have no idea how to do that. I've tried to find it in the Nokia website. I'm happy to pay for it (assuming it is compatible).

Who can help?

Drop me an PM with some more details of exactly what the ringtone is. Chances are I can help you out:)

Lindsay, a website to help you out:

Free Ringtones for mobile and iPhone - Audiko

Ignore the big thing in the middle of the page telling you how to upload a song (you can do that if you really want to), head straight for the search function top-right of the page. From there you can download ringtones in to iTunes and from there, sync on to your iPhone.

Edit: I can't find the ringtone you mention in their database.. you might have to upload it first.

Ok this is easy. I got my fav ringtone over to iPhone from a Nokia. I think it was a simple matter of importing the Nikia ringtone into iTunes. Actually I can't remember how I transferred it, BT, SMS, or via PC. But once on iPhone it played fine, just it sound like a paino, quite inteesting for rock lobster.

But if you can get the original song in iTunes it is easy to make a ring tone. You need to modify the song properties so that it plays no more than about 20 or 30 seconds of the song. Then simply save as a ringtone. I can't give proper directions until I am back on my main computer. But try a search at Whirlpool Broadband News probably in the iPhone section. I think that is where I got the instructions.

That's what I love about the AFF community. Information readily given.

Thanks drewbles, notzac and medhead. djfuzz PM'ed me with a link with the particular ringtone (Flight LH 457) ready to download. straitman also offered the assistance of jaksmum, who is currently in BNE.

Hmmm, as notzac and medhead advised, was able to save into iTunes folder, but now have to work out how to sync it with my iPhone.

I'm sure I could just about ask my 3 y.o. daughter and she'd be able to do it.

Select your phone on the left under "Devices", then select 'Ringtones' tab at the top, and if you have 'Sync Ringtones -> Selected ringtones:' Select the ringtone. If not, put "All ringtones" if it's not already.

If it's not in the Ringtones then it's not imported into iTunes. If you've put it in the folder but not imported it into iTunes, it won't auto import (unless you put it in the auto import folder). Easiest way is just find the file in Explorer/Finder (Windows/Mac) and drop it into iTunes Library. This will import it.

Thanks drewbles. I saved it to somewhere and then dropped it into the Library, then picked it up and put it into my iPhone.

Now sitting there as a Custom. Perfect. Now all my AFF & FT contacts have the perfect ringtone.

Great. Glad that worked.

To follow up. If yopu iwsh to make a ring tone in itunes:

right click (sorry using windows version) to go to "get Info" for the song.
Selection options tab, about half way down there are start time and stop time settings. Change these to the preferred time, and less than about 20 seconds in duration.
Clcik ok.
Then create a copy of the song, and change the extension to .m4r, from m4a.

don't forget to unselect the start and stop times on the original file.

Thanks medhead. Will have to find a ringtone I actually like and want to save though...

I use it to convert proper songs, rather than ringtines as such (misspoke myself there)

so I have Duran Duran's girls on film for example for a mate who suits that ring tone. Plus a couple other songs. Much more interesting to give people dirfferent ring tones

I believe the maximum ringtone length on an iPhone is 40 seconds, and if on a mac, using GarageBand is a good way of converting the tracks, as simply changing the extension doesn’t always fool iTunes.
