Apologise in advance as I'm pretty sure this has been asked before. Aircraft downgrade from B747 to A330 for QF 5/6 towards the end of the year. What are my options when I call up QF? I remember reading something about either getting some refund (of a portion of the ticket) or paying to upgrade to J. My booking class is in T (discounted PE). Oh, and tickets were bought through br.

Thanks for that, Brettmcg! An extra $500 each way is not an outrageous amount, especially if the return flight is being quoted in SGD.

Can you do a points op up? Should only be 25,000 each way

Points upgrades and op-ups are two separate concepts.

Also, you can't upgrade from Y+ to J where Y+ is no longer being offered :S

I think you know what I mean

as the OP has indeed a booking in Y+ but not seat available, I cannot see the harm in asking help desk if this is an option

It would be $500 AUD each way as it's an Ex Australia return fare rather than two one ways. I don't think its great value as your paying probably close to $2000 for a fare that is often available for $2500 and up in J. For the day flight up I would take the downgrade with compo while coming back I question the value of j given the poor chances of sleep, very average food and old equipment.

Thanks for the advice, markis10. $2000 for a return fare in J is not too bad. The cheapest I've ever managed to get to KUL/SIN in J was about $2800. Anyway, the extra cost of upgrading to a J ticket ensures that I will reach platinum with Enrich this year so that I can stop crediting my flying to QF, thanks to the new changes to the FF programme, and continue to enjoy OWE benefits.

In fact it turns out that pax from SYD are won't get the same deal as those from BNE

Effective 01 October 2014 there will be a change of operating aircraft type between Sydney and Singapore from a B744 three cabins, offering Business, Premium Economy and Economy, to an A330 two cabins, offering Business and Economy.

All Premium Economy customers will be progressively re-accommodated to the Economy cabin.

Business and Economy passengers will not be impacted.

The following options are available to affected Qantas Premium Economy cabin customers holding a valid commercial ticket excluding Qantas frequent flyer tickets issued on/before 06 April 2014 who are affected by the aircraft change for travel on/after 01 October 2014.
For customers holding a Qantas (081) issued ticket:

Passengers may, without (Change Fee):
Reroute/Rebook:

  • to Business class cabin on the same flight and travel date as originally ticketed. Fare difference is payable.

Conditions
  • All changes must be made prior to the original ticketed departure.
  • Qantas will not be responsible for paying any other costs or expenses such as hotel or other ground operator fees arising due to events beyond our control, unless required by applicable laws.
  • All other rules and conditions of the ticket remain unchanged.
  • Customers are permitted to make changes as outlined in this policy. Any subsequent changes made after the ticket is reissued will be subject to the rules and conditions of the original ticketed fare purchased.

For customers with unticketed bookings:

For unticketed bookings, alternate flights/routings can be rebooked subject to availability and tickets issued in accordance with fare conditions.

I will be mightily pissed off if I have to pay the fare difference to upgrade to J because I reckon it will cost more than buying a J ticket outright with MH! If they don't do right by me with this problem, QFi won't be seeing any more of my business after that flight to SIN in November.

We have been caught up on a BA WT+ flight which is code sharing on QF51 BNE-SIN. Downgraded to Y on the A330 :(. I normally like flying the A330 (but not if I have paid for a PE seat!).

We are now hoping for a reroute via SYD and BA16. I realise that BA WT+ from SYD will be a downgrade (vs QF PE), but the Flounge may be some compensation. I'll report back!!

Rebooked by my TA onto QF521 (bonus not being the BA code share :)) and BA 16 from SYD. In reality a better overall outcome, as we now get some SYD FLounge time (Mrs Aus ATC's first time there), a later departure from BNE, and no 7 hr layover in SIN. I had hoped to be able to directly compare QF PE and BA WT+, but that will have to wait for another trip.
