I recently did a short flight BNE - SYD. The ticket was a discount economy and I ended up only earning 400 points for the trip plus 400 points for Platinum status.
I was under the impression there is a minimum 800 points or does this included status points as well?

So if you have no status you would get 800 points for the flight. Seems inequitable to me that status would earn no more.

That's correct. But remember that for flights that earn 401 to 800 the platinum QFF member is earning more than 800 while non-status still earns 800.

Of course it is not possible to earn 401 but hopefully the concept is understandable.

Same as ADL to PER, its 800 QF FF points and 15 QF SCs.
Blame Jul 14 changes, its now based on distance flown.
Starts for everyone at 800 QF FF points, called MPG (Minimum Points Guarantee), and 10 QF SC, based on miles flown, not kilometers flown!
VA is a bit better in that the more you pay in fares, excluding the credit card surcharge, the more VA FF points a person earns.

The points earning method makes no difference to how the minimum points guarantee works. Minimum Points includes any status bonus, has done for a long time. Actually a platinum flyer earns 800 points in their own right for Bne-syd, 400 base points plus 400 status bonus.

But a few points are required. The points earning actually moved away from being distance based to region based in July 2014. Even if the regions/categories are related to distance, points earning solely depends on the regions/category of flight and not the distance of the flight. Also worth noting that before 1 july 2014 earning was distance based on miles flown. It used to be kilometre based about 15 years ago, that change was another significant devaluation.

Secondly ADL-PER is categorised as a Domestic Australia Medium flight. That category has a base earning of 700 points and 15 SC for discount economy. A bronze QFF member would then earn the 800 minimum guarantee. But all higher status levels earn more than 800, with platinum earning 1400 points (700+700). In this respect it is not the same as BNE-SYD.

Nothing to do with Simpler and fairer. The minimum points guarantee has always applied after any other bonus was applied.

Still it is simpler and fairer that earning based on miles flown resulted in only a handful of routes that triggered minimum points for platinum status. That has now changed considerably since things became simpler and fairer.

It's worth noting that while I've just outlined the situation in this thread, that might be a poor indication of my agreement with the current situation.
