Folks,

I am flying down to Melbourne to help my son relocate back to Brisbane.
He has an electric guitar and its hard case.

He is understandably reluctant to have it stored underneath having toured with orchestras overseas (what do you have to do to snap the neck of a double bass stored inside its hard case? Don't know but they did)

I have rung Qantas today and they said we can take in on board as hand luggage so long as its linear dimensions don't exceed 115cm - it seems odd but linear is defined as a) the total length of the case added to the width of the case added to the height of the case??

Any ideas??

regards

In addition to your carry-on baggage allowance, you may also carry on board one small personal item such as a handbag, laptop computer*, overcoat, small camera, a reasonable amount of reading material or a small amount of duty free goods (where permitted).
* For a laptop computer to be considered a personal item it must be carried in a slim bag. Laptops carried in large laptop bags will be counted as part of your carry-on baggage allowance

[h=2]Musical Instruments[/h] A musical instrument in its hard-shell case which weighs no more than 7kgs and does not exceed the maximum dimensions for musical instruments set out above, can be taken as Carry-on Baggage and must be placed in the overhead locker.
If its total linear dimensions are 105cm (41in) or less, then it will be equivalent to a 105cm (41in) bag in the Carry-on Baggage Table. If its total linear dimensions are between 105cm (41in) and 130cm (51in) then it will be taken as equivalent to a 115cm (45in) bag in the Carry-on Baggage Table.
Please measure your musical instrument before arriving at the airport. A small musical instrument, for example most violins, usually fit within the musical instrument allowance. Larger musical instruments, for example most guitars, do not fit within the musical instrument allowance as detailed above. You must check in your larger musical instruments, alternatively you can purchase an extra seat and carry as a Bulky item.

It will be over the maximum size for taking on board. Suggest you take it to the wrapping service (Protectabag) at Melbourne International T2 - they can put bubble wrap around it for you, that should give it good protection.

Are you able to buy a seat for the guitar? I believe this is fairly common practise for large musical instruments that are too big for normal hand luggage provisions.

Maybe you can:

2. Other options if your musical instrument does not meet the above requirements, you can:

  • purchase a fare for bulky items to carry it on a separate seat, subject to availability and size restrictions* or

Thanks HVR, am I right to assume that the cost is the same as for a passenger?
