Can you check in only part of your baggage all the way through? My rollaboard is likely too big for a Dash 8 CBR to SYD (smaller size and less weight allowed than other domestic flights), but would be an appropriate size for SYD to LAX. Can I have them check the rollaboard to SYD and the suitcase through to LAX? Or am I asking for trouble and should just get a Dash-8-able bag?

I don't actually know if you can do this, but i would have thought once you are checked in and baggage dropped you wouldn't be able to check in more once you get to SYD. I often use the dash 8's from CBR and always see people carrying more than the allowable limit, ie a big rollaboard + laptop cabin bag so i think you would be fine, just stick it under the seat rather than trying to jam it in the locker - that would draw a bit of attention perhaps. I'm yet to see them stop and check anyones carry on.

turbo, it wouldn't be checking in more in SYD. We'd get the rollaboard off the belt at SYD and then take it on board with us. One bag would be chcked CBR to LAX and the other just CBR to SYD.

If I chance it with the rollaboard on the Dash 8, can I check it at the gate if they won't let it on? That's my main concern.

You can get a "premium hand luggage" tag and then you leave it at bottom of stairs as u board the crash 8 and then collect it at the bottom of the stairs as you disembark

of course, sorry i misread that. I'd say it could probably be done but i'm not exactly sure. If you explain it to the agent they might even tell you not to worry about it - just take it on. I doubt you'd have any trouble getting it on anyway. if they really got picky you could probably get them to chuck it in the hold given nearly every time i walk across the apron the handlers are still standing there with the 'boot' open!
