There was a thread recently where it was pointed out the carry-on allowance for DJ flights had a combined total maximum weight for all items of 7kg.

I see this has changed and is now 2 x 105cm bags with a combined total weight of up to 7Kg plus a personal item (handbag/laptop).

Baggage allowance and excess baggage | Virgin Australia

[h=4]What’s allowed[/h] You may take baggage weighing up to 7kg on board with you as this is included in your fare. The total weight of either option below must not exceed 7kg and may consist of:

  • Two carry-on pieces (e.g. small bag or briefcase) that do no exceed the following dimensions; height 34cm x length 48cm x depth 23cm (total linear dimensions 105cm) each; or
  • One small bag or briefcase (total linear dimensions 105cm plus one non-rigid suit pack or garment bag that does not exceed the following dimensions; height 114cm x length 60cm x depth 11cm (total linear dimensions 185cm).
In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance you may also carry one of the following personal items in the cabin:

  • a laptop computer*, handbag, pocketbook or purse;
  • An overcoat, wrap or blanket;
  • An umbrella or walking stick;
  • A small camera or pair of binoculars;
  • A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight; or
  • A pair of crutches or prosthetic devices for your use, provided that you are dependant on them for mobility.
*Laptops in a thin satchel style laptop bag are considered to be a personal item. Laptops in larger laptop bags are counted as part of your carry-on allowance.

A combined weight of 7kg is not a lot for 2 105cm bags... :shock:

Well it's better than ONE bag only with no published ability to take a laptop bag/briefcase as well.

Am I reading it correct that in addition to the 2x105 bags you can also take a laptop... Would be interesting to try to get on and see what the gate agent has to say.

:oops::oops:

I got that wrong.:-|

The allowance was a maximum total COMBINED weight of 7kg, including the one bag and the laptop:

You may take, included in your fare, baggage weighing up to 7 kg on board with you, which might consist of:

  • One carry-on bag that must not exceed height 34 cm × length 48 cm × depth 23 cm or
  • Two briefcases, or
  • Two small bags, or
  • One briefcase/small bag and one suit pack/garment bag (60 cm × 114 cm × 11 cm)
  • The total of each combination must not exceed 7kg

That is the old rules what you originally quoted is also on the DJ website and seem to be new. So not sure about the discrepancy.

But yes the total size restriction is 105cm for the 2 pieces.

What at has changed?

So it's rather clearer - there is no doubt that a Standard size laptop bag is to be considered a personal item and is not included within the 7kg Limit.

Can I be an absolute heathen and ask what a standard laptop case is? I hate travelling with a laptop, but when I do, the case it's in is a purpose made (but commercial product) which contains the laptop (14" or so I think) all cords/cables etc, a USB portable colour inkjet printer (a little rectangular affair), separate mouse and assorted paraphernalia like some A4 paper etc. It can expand out a bit with zips and is carried either over the shoulder with supplied strap or like a soft briefcase and originally bought from officeworks. Would this constitute a standard laptop case?

I don't know that I like your chances. DJ provides that:

In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance you may also carry one of the following personal items in the cabin:
  • a laptop computer*, handbag, pocketbook or purse;

Although nothing is said regarding cables, printer, mouse and paper ... :shock:

Re: What at has changed?

Apologies for the thread-dig here, but this seems like the most appropriate one. Has anyone confirmed or flown with a laptop bag similar to swanning_it? I'm flying in the next few days and I'm wondering if my HP laptop bag will be included in my carry on allowance or wont.

In reality, common sense should prevail.

There's few examples around, but here's one from AirNZ: (Cabin Baggage - Baggage - Travelling - Air*New*Zealand - New Zealand Site)

Laptops

Laptops in a thin satchel are considered a personal item, however laptops in larger computer bags are counted as one piece of cabin baggage.

This thin laptop satchel is considered a personal item and is permitted in addition to your usual cabin baggage allowance

This large laptop satchel is counted as 1 piece of cabin baggage allowance

I posted the below on another thread so maybe this is a result of the change. Re-posting here as more relevant for this thread.

On my 1pm flight from SYD - OOL last Sunday, 1st April, I witnessed a flight attendant checking carry on suitcase bags as people boarded. She would compare the size to hers and then check the weight by lifting hers in one hand and the passengers in the other. Good luck if she tried it on me, I bring a bag not a suitcase anyway so probably wouldn't happen. Heaps of people had to leave their bags to be checked as a result of this little test!. This then resulted in a delay of 25 minutes as boarding was slow as a result of this process with passengers who had their bag checked having to be re-ticketed. What a joke this was, I suppose it was April fool's Day but this process needs to be done at check in or if they want to crack down on this they should call over all passenger's with a carry on suitcase about 10 minutes before boarding and perform this check and place a special sticker or tag on bag so that it can be seen when boarding. This girl seemed to be new as the CSM watched her most of the flight and watched her perform this ludicrous boarding procedure so do not know what the story is here.
