About 3 weeks ago I was in NZ for work and flew between Wellington and Christchurch with Air NZ. After my trip, (about a week ago) no SCs had been credited so filed a missing points claim, only to receive an email from Velocity advising me that the flight booked wasn't able to earn Velocity SCs.

Had I known, I would've booked one that would've, but on the booking screen it didn't show the fare class anywhere. So my questions is, before purchasing a flight, how do you know which class it falls under? I'm quite familiar with VA by now, but what about Air NZ? I can't seem to find anything on their site except this, which doesn't list the fare class: [can't post a link apparently, but just add /domestic-fares after the domain]

I'll be travelling within NZ a bit more over the coming months so I want to be able to earn SCs (SO close to Gold now) for my flights. Any help appreciated!

It's coughbersome, but you have to select your flight/ticket type then click 'continue with regular payment'. On the next page, look for the small 'itinerary' box on the right. Hover your mouse over the highlighted '1 Flight' & you'll see the fare class under 'Service Class'; e,g Economy (S).

I've been in the same boat as you; flew a couple of Domestic FlexiPlus flights 18 months ago, after numerous missing claims Velocity told me the flights weren't eligible for earn because they weren't Q, H, M, B or Y class. Despite them being the most flexible, expensive tickets available! Very frustrating.

Agree, very poor that Velocity can't get this right with one of their most significant partners.

This happened when NZ elites protested as at the start of the alliance, VA members could earn points (even elite bonus IIRC) while NZ own members couldn't on their Airpoints program. NZ took the decision of prohibiting VA from earning on domestic flights on most fares. But of course Airpoints has relaxed earning on domestic flights and all flights are eligible. Perhaps VA should do a review with NZ.

If I had known, that as a VA VR member, I don't earn VR points or SC on ANZ S class fares, I would have flown NZ JQ and earnt QFFF points when I flew AKL to CHC a few months ago!

Under Grabaseat, K class is FlexiTime/Flexiplus, and because its not Y/B/Q/H/M, no points earnt either.
Pity.
I don't know which NZ fares earns VR points/VR SC..., where is true Y/B fare on NZd?

I agree this is a pain point of Velocity. Even ultra expensive fares booked last minute on NZ often don't qualify. While I like using NZ trans-tasman, the earnings are so poor even on expensive Works deals that it's not worth it, so I usually book QF.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Very frustrating.

just checked my 2 flights in November and neither of them qualify for SC.

And if you somehow found the $ to buy a J/C/D ticket on the wide bodied 787/777/767, esp if booked on the VA website, be prepared to be shafted onto VA's 737.
OR be prepared to be shafted from a wide body to a narrow, if you still end up flying NZ that is.
NZ keeps either swapping planes, or doing things that puts people off from booking or continue flying with them.
At least QF gives a guaranteed amount of points and SC, and if booked on the QF website, but on EK metal wide bodied, you keep that. So if you choose to fly a J/C/D fare on the wide bodied, you keep that.
I don't why VA and NZ are like this, ie, NZd fares do not earn VR FF or VR SC. More so where do I get info on which fare is full Y on NZd?

Had my 2 flights last week and while I didn't get any SC's etc, I was surprised how seamless the experience was at Auckland airport. Scanned my mobile boarding pass at the lounge, it had I was VA Gold and I got to choose frequent flyer seats on the seat map. So you get all the advantages of status but just not the SC's.

Would be great if they could fix this.

The only way to earn NZ dom SC while being a VA VR member, as to FF points and SC, is to fly C or D from Aust to NZ, say MEL or SYD or BNE in C or D, and then you will get Y from AKL to any other NZ dom airport.
Flying anything except C or D from Aust to NZ, will not give you Y earn.
You can try it out.
Try doing a dummy booking, and then get to itineary stage, as mentioned on here, right click on the mouse or keypad, and the class will come up.
L or V will come up, for the NZ dom flight class, ie, no FF points or SC earnt, if you fly from Aust to NZ in anything except TT business.

I am confused by your statement.
Qantas does not operate NZ domestic and is all JQ operated and they have exceptions ( ie the cheaper fares) like VA does

Points and Status Credits are not earned on Qantas codeshare flights (ie flights with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar or Jetstar Asia other than in Economy classes of B, H, K, L or Y

To earn on a domestic connection with a VA flight number you need to be in Y L B K H class fare or Y B Q H M on a NZ number

As for the amount of points you earn, a SYD to AKL in discount business would earn 2500 QF points where a VA on the same route would earn 2684 points ( 2 points for all business class bookings) - Then on top of both apply your bonus

Well, now that I know how to find the elusive Y class on NZ dom flights within NZ, ...
If I choose to fly JQ within NZ, I can pay Nzd$19 for a plus bundle, adding this to any JQ dom (within NZ fare). This gives 800 QF FF points and 10 QF SCs.
The following is: a solution to "how to find the Y class on NZ dom". You can go and try to find it, no other way to get NZ dom Y class, other than to fly into AKL on an int flight, and then link that flight with an in NZ flight, on (Air) NZ.
You go and find a Y, K, B, L, H fare for me, on NZ without an int flight link. Only S will come up on Grabaseat.

I will now rest my paws. Confusion! Fine, let others find that elusive Y NZ dom that will earn VA FF mileage and VA SC.

I just found NZ domestic fares in "M" and "Q" class. Which I believe falls under "Discount Economy" with VA

  • Air New Zealand - Domestic New Zealand: Q, H, M

So it is possible. But incredibly poor value and not worth pursuing.
