For the past four years I've been heading to Vegas annually for a work convention. The first three trips were mainly spent either on the trade show floor or in my room at night while the others headed out. There are plenty of things to do in Vegas for under 21's, but come 10pm onward, you're on your own. This year's February work trip was great - I was finally 21 and could join the others - but I had to do Vegas right. No work. No waking up at stupid o'clock. No half marathon walks down to the convention centre (MGM).

Fast forward to June. Fares ex-SYD were continually hovering at around $2500. Suddenly Virgin announce a USA sale beginning 18th July for around $1390. Perfect. VA1/VA2 too, no flying on int. Delta. Perfect-er. All 5 of us book immediately, with a friend's Dad (let's call him Bob) booking shortly after in J. Bob gets in contact with a host at Wynncore and we're booked into a suite, connecting tower suite room and two other rooms all on the same floor for 19-31st July at Encore. No specific details were given on what kind of suite we had - but with Wynncore being at the top end of properties on the strip, I had a feeling it would be quite special. I was a little worried that 13 days in Vegas would be a little too much. Oh was I wrong.

July 19th. We're all buzzing. I haven't been this excited for a trip in a long, long time. The line for check in was full. Thankfully priority was near empty and all 5 of us, despite me being the only PS in the group, are issued boarding passes in minutes. We were advised that Y is completely full - optimistic me is hoping the next line out of her mouth is "so you've been upgraded" - but no such luck. Apparently VA1 the day before had an extremely light load, something like 80 pax in total. Bob hadn't arrived yet but by the time he did the priority queue was considerably longer.

A little over an hour later we're on VA1. We say our goodbyes to Bob as he turns left and off to 1-something. Y is chockers as expected, not a spare seat. Walking through the plane I notice we're not on the refurbed 777. Skinny/bony me isn't a fan of the padding, especially for 13 hours. We boarded about 10 minutes prior to doors closing so before we know it we're in the air and being served lunch. Choices are butter chicken with rice, beef with mashed potato or some vegetarian option (could've been pasta). I chose the butter chicken.

Was actually very decent. The pasta in the top left I was a huge fan of. Lemon cheesecake I loved too - my friends didn't though so I happily scoffed down another 2.

Entertainment choice on this flight wasn't great. In such a confined space I can't settle in properly and watch a movie, so I'll usually watch TV. There wasn't much variety though. Would love to see them include full seasons of shows, not just a select few.

Around 8 hours into the flight - just when the "whY am I doing this I hate life" thoughts kick in - I see a foot, 36K's foot, work it's way through the gap between my seat and the window and rest it's smelly self on my armrest. I gave it an "accidental" hard hit with my elbow, 36K grunted and I think he got the message. But no, around 20 minutes later it reappears. This continued for another couple hours before I blocked the gap with a pillow. Y is hard for everyone. You're not special. Don't make it hellish for me.

Breakfast was a tomato/cheese/onion frittata with onions and chicken sausage (yuck) with vanilla yogurt (yum) and croissant (dry).

So we finally land. Bob says he only got a couple hours sleep - he prefers QF's skybed and J food. The walk from the gate to customs is long but was appreciated by everyone... seemed to wake us all up. Customs was a breeze, we collect our luggage. I look at my bag tag. LAX? Not LAS? Turns out my bag - only mine - wasn't checked through to LAS. Fixed this up at the Delta service desk, jumped in a taxi and made our way to...

The boys hadn't even heard of this place. Turned out to be a daily staple of the trip. Remember to ask for "animal style" on the burger and fries!

In n Out next to LAX is actually a fantastic place for plane spotting. Not sure which runway it's adjacent to but it's ridiculously active. There was a plane landing every 1-2 minutes.

So we wrapped up our meals and made our way back to T5 for the flight to Vegas. We were a little early so made our way to Delta's Skyclub. Bob's AMEX Centurion and DJ WP card was enough to get all 6 of us into the lounge. It's not the best - food and drink selection very limited - but it was nice to relax for a little and have a chat. DL4642 was called and we made our way down to the gate, but of course the scheduled 3:24PM departure turned to an approximately 4PM departure, the inbound was late (this has happened on all 5 of my trips to Vegas). The way that Delta handles their seat assignments still confuses the hell out of me. Bob, Bob's son and myself were all issued seat numbers, but the others were advised to wait until the "first three letters of their surname and first name initial" appears on the screen. Even as we were boarding we had no idea if the others would make it on this flight. After a little while we were all seated bar one. It appeared everyone had boarded until finally the missing appears, walks a couple of meters and takes the empty F seat next to Bob. Lucky b*****d :D

Quick 40ish minute flight to LAS, during which I made the obligatory 30,000ft Facebook check-in (Go-go inflight have added a $1.95 option for 15 minutes). I always find the approach into LAS a little unnerving, fierce winds make for some scary sways and dips. The boys loved the poker machines in the airport, such a perfect welcome for Vegas virgins. Headed down to baggage claim, Bob, Bob's son & I collected our luggage. The others waited. And waited. Delta left their luggage in LAX. They gave them all a little kit with pyjamas, Delta shirt and toiletries. They were also told that they will be reimbursed up to $50 for any clothes/items they wanted to buy between now and the time that their luggage arrives in LAS (which was delivered to Encore at around midnight).

We meet up with the limo driver from Wynn and we were soon on our way to Encore. Sinatra playing in the limo, probably not the best for 21-22 year olds but after being up for 30 hours we're not in the mood for Champagne Showers just yet. Nice little details in the limo... Wynn's logo:

Around 15 minutes later we're at Encore. Bob's host greets us at the limo and we head straight into the elevator. Keys have already been cut. Let's check out the main suite first. We all smile as we approach the big black HEAVY double doors. They open...

Oh my. To be continued.

Inspirational stuff on making it to Vegas. I drive past that In-N-Out as the planes go overhead. It is very "Wayne's World" in that LAX location.

Great report so far.
How did the cab driver react to being asked to do such a short trip to In-And-Out? I have heard they get very snarly.

Thanks guys!

Serfty, we discovered the bus on the way back! They charged us $2 each after asking how much it is to head back to LAX. Perhaps they take advantage of those that don't know it's free? :D

Justin, he said the minimum fare out of LAX is $20 + tip. I imagine they have a lot of people doing similar trips.

I'm a fan of more modern decor in rooms - think Cosomopolitan, Aria - so I wasn't sure what I'd think of Encore's "classic" fit out. But as soon as I walked into the Salon suite I was blown away. The thing about Wynn/Encore is that photos & video really don't do the place justice whatsoever. The quality, design, size, even smell all combine to make a room that oozes opulence. The massage room was pretty cool too. ;)

Master. Forgive the messy bed, these were taken on the last day.

2q2k9kj.jpg

Looking out from the master to the main room, with the connecting tower suite in the distance.

With this room (and all salon suites I believe) being towards the corner of Encore, the view down the strip was fantastic. We were on the 31st floor.

After a quick look around we went off to our separate rooms to dump our luggage. The connecting tower suite is similar to the standard suites in the hotel. The only difference I noticed is slightly different decor (the L shaped lounge is brown rather than black), free water/newspaper daily, much more generous amenities in the bathroom (razor, toothbrush, comb etc.) and obviously lift access via the tower suites lobby. We were all provided with "tower suites" marked room keys though so access wasn't an issue even for those slumming it in the standard rooms. :p

My room was a fair walk down from the salon suite which obviously proved too difficult on many nights/mornings. Apparently the bathroom floor is more comfortable.

The room is huge. It's more of a "half suite" as the lounge area isn't separated by a wall/door, just a partition which the TV sits on. The bathroom has a great shower, full sized bath, double vanity and separate room for the toilet. Really quite impressive for the lowest room category of the hotel.

(Still with me? It gets better I promise.)

We all headed back to Bob's salon suite where a bottle of Veuve was waiting and we made a toast to 2 weeks of saying goodbye to our brain and livers. We tried to nap but a few of us, including myself, couldn't sleep. We decided to check out Tao at Venetian but agreed it'll be a quiet one...

:D

We were given a quick tour of the venue by one of Tao's hosts and were eventually offered a very cheap table considering the location and it being Tao's industry night (Thursday). Needless to say a couple of bottles later our "quiet night" was the extreme opposite of that. The host grabbed us and said "I'm going to change the game". I unfortunately don't remember much from this point forward, but we apparently ended up at another table where everyone quickly became our best friends.

9 hours later I wake up in a bed that isn't mine...

Very interesting so far

Awesome TR - unburdened with heavy laborious detail and the pics fit well.

So jealous, can't wait to see more.

Thanks all :)

I wake up at 4 something PM, roll over and notice my suitcase isn't where I had left it. My phone and wallet are missing. I know I'm in Encore but who's room? Did someone from Tao take me back? Did someone steal my stuff? Brown L shaped lounge - a ha! Connecting tower suite room! I open a door and walk into familiar-land otherwise known as Bob's Salon suite. Bob is watching TV and laughs as soon as he sees me walk in. I apparently passed out in the massage room so Bob picked me up and put me into bed.

Before you all start to think I'm a crazy alcoholic - this TR will and probably already has proved otherwise - there is little to no RSA in Vegas (and I love it). Why?

1. Shots are usually around 50ml, that's close to double our standard shot size.

2. Asking for a double or something, eg double vodka/red bull, will literally mean you get a glass of vodka with a dash of red bull.

3. When getting bottle service you are free to pour your own drinks from the bottle (or have a shot poured into your mouth directly from the bottle by the waitress. Vegas.).

Bob's host kindly books us into SW at Wynn for 7, which became 8 and eventually 9PM. Turns out I'm not the only one with a hangover. I've heard a lot of things about this restaurant including best steakhouse in America so needless to say I'm very excited.

Just a side note: it truly is amazing the power casino hosts have in Vegas. Booking into any restaurant at any time, even sometimes as late as 30 mins before, was never any problem. Especially impressive considering we're a group of 6.

SW was okay. Definitely a nice steak but not oh my god incredible. What was oh my god incredible - Lake of Dreams which the restaurant sits beside. Every half hour or so, the lake is the stage for a 2-3 minute show with all sorts of animatronics, lights and effects. This isn't my video but it should give you a good idea of what it's like:

After dinner we were off to Tryst, one of Wynn's clubs. Definitely wasn't as crazy as the night before at Tao although it is a brilliant venue. We get a nice table that's right next to the 90ft waterfall outside. We're a little too far away from all the action inside so we weren't convinced to destroy ourselves a second night in a row. One by one the guys head back up to their rooms before I eventually call it quits and sleep in my own bed for the very first time. A quick call to all the guys to ensure that we wake up early and not waste another day in bed and I'm off to sleep in undoubtedly the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on (Wynn actually sell these for ~$2k).

29l1wz9.jpg

12 hours later and I'm awake. Fantastic, another day wasted. I call the guys and they're just waking up too - looks like I'm not the only one to fall in love with the Wynn bed. Bob tells me he's booked Mizumi for 7PM so meet in his suite at 6:30. We end up underestimating the walk from Encore to Mizumi (although we were very casually strolling along thanks to a couple of slow walkers in the group... my long legs definitely don't agree with slow walkers) and arrive at 7:30ish. Absolutely no problem with being late despite the restaurant being quite busy and we were welcomed with smiles all round. I've heard many stories about people being only 10-15 minutes late and being denied their reservations, particularly at Wynncore restaurants, but this was never an issue for us. Whether this is the casino being very accommodating to players or if they've just adjusted their policies I'm not sure.

Mizumi offer traditional sit down sushi dining or teppanyaki, we hear the latter is fantastic so we all agree to that and are quickly sat down. The restaurant also sits beside a lake & waterfall, a common theme for their restaurants it seems. Food was brilliant, $70-75/head got us a mixed greens/tofu salad, miso soup, shrimp with mushrooms (mind blowing) and a choice of meat; shrimp/scallops/bass/chicken/beef. The thing I love about teppanyaki is that not only do you pay for food but also entertainment - the chef was fantastic. This was particularly impressive (sorry about the lack of sound, not sure what happened with this clip):

After dinner we made our way to XS. Bob makes a call to his host to ensure we're looked after at the door - 5 boys trying to get into XS on a Saturday night without a table reservation is usually a huge hassle. We're greeted by one of XS's hosts and walked straight in (bypassing the ridiculously long line) with comp'd entry. Unbelievable, I promise myself that I won't get used to this but at this moment in time, damn it feels good. :D D.Y.K.W.I.A?!

As soon as we walk in we come to a stop. They love to pack in as many people as possible into this place. Inside it is almost impossible to move let alone dance. It takes us a good 15-20 minutes to walk outside - offered a very cheap table right next to the pool so we snatch it up as XS is meant to be Vegas' top club. The bottle prices here are crazy expensive so we order a magnum Grey Goose to just cover the minimum.

Forgive the quality. Pool bar with blackjack, coughs and baccarat tables.

Sometime during the night we're approached by a shady looking guy claiming to work for Drai's, telling us to come past later and he'll "hook us up". Yeah awesome cool we tell him with absolutely no intention of going.

There are some great advantages to getting a table. Not only do they make sense financially if you're with a group (if you can get them cheap) but they also mean no waiting the bar (I heard a few people complaining about waiting 30 odd minutes for a drink). You do attract the leeches who somehow make their way to your table and help themselves but we ended up meeting a ton of great people out of it - on this night, a nice group of mature ladies from LA (read: college girls). Those of us with partners were very well behaved and headed up to their rooms early. The remaining 2 (myself and Bob's son) stayed with the group. XS ended up closing early, but having woken up so late, we're not quite ready for bed. So what do we do?

v5c2ma.jpg

Of course! We jump in a limo parked outside in Wynn's valet and negotiate the driver down to $30. Couple of quick phone calls to shady Drai's guy and he tells us to meet him outside. The group is praising Drai's telling us it's one of the best clubs in Vegas. We're going to love it etc. Woohoo party!

We get to Bill's casino (where Drai's resides in). Shady Drai's guy is no where to be found. Eventually he calls and he tells us he's been banned from the casino and there's nothing he can do to get back inside. LOL. Great.

The entrance to Drai's is very small and sits in the middle of the casino floor. As this is an "after hours" club everyone from the "normal" clubs flock to it once its closed. So basically you have hundreds of people in a scrum surrounding the entrance doing whatever they can to entice the bouncers to let them in. It's very loud, people are very drunk and very annoyed. Eventually we're somehow let in. The place is dark and seedy, but there's music and room to move so we're happy. A couple of hours we leave, walk outside and...

Sunlight. We head back to Encore and call it quits. Looks like we're going to waste another day.

Thanks all :)

It's not much different right across the US (though I do love Vegas). Only in the US can you wipe yourself out for less than $10. However it does pay to be female in Vegas; free entry and with the right host, free drinks.

Heading there next month...but wont have any VIP access unless I get lucky over there.
Looking forward to next report.

No idea how I forgot about this trip report! I'll try my best to finish it off...

We end up heading to bed at around 7AM. The only regret I (and I'm sure the rest of the boys) have is sleeping all day, (almost) every day. We had every intention of checking out the day clubs and pool parties but we just couldn't pull ourselves out of bed. Part of this is to be blamed on our lack of plans and agreeing on "letting Vegas show us the light" but it just allowed us to be lazy, along with the comfort of knowing we were there for almost 2 weeks and we could "do it later". Such a shame to waste half the trip in bed but we certainly made up for it at night.

So we wake up at 6PM and get ready for dinner. Bartolotta tonight at Wynn, a beautiful Italian seafood restaurant. Wasn't too busy so we were seated at a nice table/cabana outside next to the lake. They have 8 or so tables dotted around the lake, makes for a nice atmosphere that's not too loud and allows you to enjoy conversation without having to scream across the table a la SW. Had the best lobster I've ever had along with ravioli, some fish, spaghetti and prawns. A proper Italian feast will a scary bill to suit. We finished a great bottle of white (the name escapes me at the moment) and headed back up to the suite to get ready for another night at XS.

Tonight was "nightswim" at XS with Knife Party (Australian duo) playing. XS has a fantastic pool that wraps around the outside bar/mini casino and runs right up to the main area of the club:

404798.jpg

Nightswim is held every Sunday during Vegas' Summer. They turn the DJ booth around to face the pool with everyone outside/in the pool. This obviously means you can head in wearing whatever you want - nice change from being forced to wear collared shirts, leather shoes etc.

This was our first night without a table as the minimums were ridiculous. Prime positions were asking $7k+. Ended up waiting 45 mins for a drink, only 3 bartenders working the main outside bar. Clearly understaffed. We all pretty much agreed at that point that XS wasn't all that it's hyped up to be. I really wanted to enjoy the club and give it a second chance as I've heard only good things, but the ridiculous overcrowding inside and poorly run bars made it impossible to enjoy without a good table. Thankfully the night got better from here on....

After downing our drinks we headed into the pool as Knife Party came on to play. THIS was fun. Not sure if anyone here if a fan of EDM (electronic dance music) but if you are, you've likely heard "Internet Friends" by Knife Party. If not, let me set the scene. At this part of the song (really, don't click if you don't like EDM. You won't like it): Knife Party - Internet Friends - YouTube - this happened:

526429_10150991575798043_1406763142_n.jpg

We are somewhere in the water. Pure fun.

I felt something hit my foot. At the same time I see a girl screaming that she lost her phone. I decide that whatever's hitting my foot definitely feels like a phone, so I close my eyes and dive into what is very likely now pee water. Sure enough I grab a soaking warranty voided iPhone and pass it over to the girl. Hugs all round, drinks promised but I lose her in amongst the water (^) - no big deal I have some jumping and splashing to do.

End up leaving not too late and head to bed at around 4, hoping to wake up tomorrow at a decent hour...

Thanks for the somewhat unedited TR, & the enthusiastic well being of your Vegas visit.. Gosh I envy your age, but also your style of travelling is more admired.
At that time of age I was still traversing the globe in cheap, questionable doss lodging amidst the very exotic nature of foreign travel in obscure lands. :D

LOL, great trip report, enjoyed the read and pics....!! Bought back memories of my own partying in Europe at the same age
