Hi,

I thought it would be interesting to know how many AFF'ers are flown premium economy or business class for work. Given the recent thread on whether you'd prefer to be paid $100/hour to sit in economy, the premise seems to be that most are booked into higher classes by default.

Of course, I know that this wouldn't be a snapshot of the general public, but it puts the AFF discussions into context.

I realise many are self-employed, but this is about where someone else is making the decision.

In my case, all flights must be cheapest available. This was introduced during GFC, where previously it was business on long haul. Since the GFC, I guess they figure people have got used to it, so why bring it back???

Where's the option for "my employer pays for me to fly F for work travel"?

Oh, there's a poll now...

You could call it "[Insert politically correct phrase] public servant option"?

Of the few public servants I know, none of them would get within a bull's roar of flying F.

The woman I know who works for DFAT, says they aren't even allowed to credit their FF account with work-funded trips.

I became eligible for business for work trips early last year. When getting approval for a Europe trip last year (approved the year before, when I was only eligible for Y) my boss said words like "I don't want you travelling down the back". However, I can't bring myself to book J for domestic and it'll be a hard call for the next international trip. My eligibility comes from a whole of government agreement with a heap of reporting and paperwork requirements. Now I can avoid the paperwork by keeping things on the low, so it might not be fair to then insist on the benefits that go with the paperwork.

As I understand they can credit the flights but can't earn points. They can earn status credits.

Y (flexi fares) on Dom and Intl less than 6 hrs (from Sydney that only really means Intl travel to NZ)
J on anything Intl over 6 hrs. And if i'm lucky enough to be travelling with an CxO level, I travel in their class, which is J domestic and F Intl.

I may have an upcoming trip to the USA, but as it is attending a conference, the above may be bent so I travel in PE rather than J.

Y only.
Two important points make it bearable.
1. We don't have a BFOD policy.
2. Each employee has the freedom to fly their preferred carrier.

Y domestic, J international (but Y to NZ and [usually] J to Perth)

You work for O&G company? My employer has the same requirements.

Three hours or more then its J, baby! Under 3 hours there is some flexibility (eg: NZ) and if you fly with the CEO .......

The 3 hour limit is linked to FBT. Companies have to pay FBT on business class flights of less than 3 hours (or at least that used to be the case).

Same as a few above, under three hours it's Economy all the way, over three hours then PE if available if not then J.

My old company was anything over 6 hours it was automatically SQ J regardless of staff level.
Since pretty much all our overseas travel was greater than 6 hours it was always SQ J.

Loved flying SQ J but if I had a choice of airline at the time I would have chosen QF.

Our company is PE for trips to UK if you have seniority and Y if you don't have seniority and BFOD in Australia and NZ.

I am one of the lucky ones who has the greatest employer in the world.
90% of my domestic is in J, and I have not flown in less than J internationally for the past 10 years with four trips during that time to the USA in F.
He is a really great guy, and one of the benefits of being self employed ;)

I didn't respond to the poll as we do no domestic travel at all, it's all long haul international (with the exception of a very short hop from LHR and I can do MCS on VX when connecting from a VA W fare into LAX). I found out that I can do Premium despite my last trip being in Y (long story) so I vote for 'Premium Only'.

Level depends on the bosses mood at the time of the request, I'm very careful about get the timing right.
