I am not sure how you can interpret anything from the poll results. It doesn't inform a specific opinion about a specific poster as the results are anonymous.

The poll options themselves don't provide any real insight either:

Yes I have Qantas Shares - as a result I defend Qantas as I believe in them as a company, or I attack qantas as I don't feel they are making the right decisions

Yes, myself or friends or family work for Qantas - as a result I passionately protect the company I love or I passionately attack the company that is being destroyed from the inside

No I do not hold Qantas shares - so I attack Qantas as I have no vested interest or I defend Qantas as I am independent of the company

I have do not have friends or family employed by Qantas - so I defend management as I am not impacted by the decisions of management or I attack QF as I am proud union supporter and hate to see my brothers hurt

I work in the travel industry - so I attack Qantas for the poor margins I am making and the bad feedback I get from my customers or I defend Qantas as I am making a motza on commissions on overpriced international J/F fares

I note its not a public pole, perhaps MalWare you could tell us do you own shares on QF, VA or any other airline?

Just curious, I think this thread is a waste of computer screen ink, if such a thing exists. :)

To be honest I suspect anyone who has superannuation effectively has an interest in Qantas shares, whether direct or not.

I have no shares in any airline, yet QF (and associated One World airlines) is my preferred carrier.
Owning shares in an airline would not affect my travel habits in the slightest.

It seems any poll is deeply flawed that I create according to the poll police here.

Maybe I should create a poll about what is needed in a good poll?

It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you.

The old You must work for an airline because you don't agree with me comment.

You do see it a lot from the one post wonders, but I find the statement a cheap shot to be perfectly honest with you.

I have shares in VA and had shares in QF but sold out recently...

As for people being biased, there are definitely some on here that will defend either QF or VA until the cows come home, despite how poor something might be from each carrier.

It's kinda funny really why some people bother defending an airline so much when it's likely they have no shares/direct involvement in the company but are just a fanboi

Personally, and I do read most threads (but maybe not every post in every thread), I do not agree with Mal Ware's perception of a general bias towards Qantas in this community. There are AFF members who like Qantas and those who do not. Its the same with most airlines commonly discussed here. There are some who like Virgin and some who do not. There are some who like Emirates and some who do not. There are some wh0 like SQ and some who do not. There are some who like Jetstar (well, ok, maybe not) and some who do not.

Some people are vocal about their likes and dislikes. That is ok and people's opinions and reflections of their own experiences are welcome here.

As an AFF member, I accept that some people will have a different view, and that is often based on their experiences which are going to be different to my own. I can accept that and am not upset of concerned that they hold a different view to me. Its not likely to change my own view and try not to get involved in arguments with others when I know I am not changing my view and I expect they won't either - so I hit the "close window" button and move on.

As an AFF Moderator, I recognise that my own opinion of a topic is irrelevant when it comes to moderation actions. All members have the ability to express their personal views equally, so long as they remain within the forum posting guidelines. I don't care if they work for an airline, have shares in an airline, know someone who works for an airline or are the CEO of an airline. If their post fits in the posting guidelines then they are welcome to post their opinion/view/experience, no matter if it follows the mainstream view or not, or even if its factually incorrect (which other members can't point out by attacking the fact/argument and not the member posting it).

My suggest to everyone is that if you don't like someone else's posting style or the opinions, then just ignore their posts. There is no requirement for any AFF member to correct things they think may be incorrect, or to try to change the opinion of others. Just let it go. Does it really matter of someone posts something you think may be biased, incorrect or influenced by some other factor? You won't save the world by convincing someone else to align with your view, no matter if its right or wrong or some shade of grey in between.

Just use the "back" or "code window/tab" button and move on to another thread/topic where you can seek to increase your knowledge base (i.e. learn something from someone else) or contribute to someone else's knowledge base (i.e. answer a question).

Now, back to the specific topic here, I don't think share ownership or knowing staff members of airlines has anywhere near the same level of bias towards one airline or another as does the "investment" we have in the airlines loyalty programs. I think FF membership and the "investment" we have in status and points/miles, coupled with the personal experiences in dealing with the airline, is a far more significant factor in influencing someone's bias for or against any airline specific. And I base this opinion on conversations with many AFF members I have met and the many thousands of posts I read on AFF each month.

Not when it is a Self Managed Fund.

I do think its a little strange when people who dont hold direct shares say they don't really care about the stock market in general. My brother is like that. He thinks that shares are akin to gambling. He got a little upset when I asked him where he thought his Super Fund monies were invested.

The problem you face is that every poll or thread you start has a lopsided opinion on the topic immediately. Generally, a negative to Qantas.

It could potentially have a lot of relevance to peoples opinions. Anyone with a vested interest is going to try and paint a rosy picture of something that is being discussed and that is clearly the case here often.

Does that include you? Your vested interest seems to be the continual discredit of not only Qantas, but anyone that likes them for a reason you don't find compelling.

There's certainly more negative threads about Qantas here, thanks to you. So I wouldn't say it's all rosy.

This is a pretty good summary to be honest!

Of course some choose to jump up and down and whinge and cry, some even send a private message to you, to abuse you, some also whinge on facebook about posters on here because of someone opinion.

One poster on here whom is well liked (for one reason only....) appears to have some mental issues judging by the PM's that they sent to me....

Makes me laugh actually

I see the Qantas shills are all out with their usual tirade of Qantas support, just proving they do own shares and most probably work for the airline. :D

If I was so anti-Qantas I simply wouldn't fly with them, which would most probably mean I wouldn't be a QF WP or show that as my only FF program status in my AFF profile....... ;)

I have two extended family members that work for Qantas. But they probably bag them more than I do haha. Difference is that I can separate Qantas as an employer of my relations and look at them as a customer and what service they provide me.

So you're suggesting that others do not have this same ability? Or just that your intellectual skills are superior to theirs?

Obviously, some of us are just Neanderthals who are ruled by base emotion and who lack any capacity to form a fact based opinion.
