Do you find Virgin Blue aircraft interiors noisier than QF?

Virgin Blue place much store in the fact their fleet is younger, however, having flown both DJ and QF on a regular basis, I, and colleagues find the DJ equipment substantially louder inside.

Is it something connected with the cabin fit out? Perhaps those hard leather seats bounce the noise around the cabin and also noticed alot more vibration.

Do other travellers notice the comparatively highr noise levels on DJ?

the only way to tell the difference is to travel on the same aircraft type in the same part of the cabin. Since DJ now only operate 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft, you will need to compare with a Qantas 737-800.

On most aircraft, the rear of the cabin is noisier than being in front of the engines.

Qantas' new A330 aircraft are very quiet, especially forward of the wings.

I haven't noticed any noise difference between the 737s of both airlines. There are a lot less rattles on DJ's 700 and 800 series compared to QF's older equipment.

I agree with NM - the A330 seems to be the quietest jet flying domestically.

The 2 737-800's have the same interior trim as far as I can tell. They also look to have similar engines (CFM56-7B27 for DJ and CFM56-7B26 for the Qantas planes).

Therefore the noise should be the same/very similar on both planes.

There are some stats on the noise producted by those engines on the web, but I can't find anything easy to point to or quote as there seems to be multiple subtypes of the 73H with the same engines.

Maybe it's the lack of in-flight entertainment that makes the perceived sound louder?

I don't notice any difference myself.

Its the leather seats that absorb the sound on the DJ aircraft .

Perhaps I have had a few flights on some of the older planes in the DJ fleet...and, true, the lack of a decent IFE might create a perception difference.

As for leather versus cloth seats, that sounds like a whole new thread, particularly on the sound and odour absorbancy comparitives..

Could also be the sound of change rattling along the aisles as people have to stump up for the coffee bags and cuppa soup!! :x
