Hmm, you can't argue with a bunch of intoxicated FF'ers... You and I need to get together and work on something. ;)

Shhh don't tell anyone but they want to hold another lounge meet to decide the DJ acronyms ... It could result in a similar situation! lol :D

I'm a process person - if it happens > than 50% of the time then it's a rule! Less than that is an exception! ;)

But seriously, yes they can do all they like to their planes, uniforms, lounges and so on, but they need to fix the cancels. And the delays too. The delay stats might look ok on paper, but the reality at peak times is very different.

All they need to do is get a few more planes (hopefully the A330's will allow some 737's to be released back to other segments) and increase their scheduled turnaround for aircraft by about 10min and it would go a long way to solving the problem. Maybe that's a bit simplistic, but it's a start.


Speaking to Cabin Crew I think this is not far away... soon they will nolonger be cleaning the aircraft themselves. So I'm assuming your idea is already in the pipeline..

No longer cleaning? Are they going to ask the passengers to do it for them? ;)

I say this half joking-half serious - on one of the delayed flights last week, the CSM asked passengers to please put the safety cards at the front of the seat pocket so they could turn the aircraft around quickly and not delay the next lot of passengers any longer (I think infuriating people even more to be honest). I guess asking the passengers to do a quick spray and wipe would only be a little bit extra! :D

After the announcement she even said to the other FA "I doubt they'll do it, they never listen anyway". I felt like saying "with that attitude you'll have a job at QF in no time!"

The other weird thing was she said at the start of the flight - "we apologise that due to the delay we weren't able to have the cabin up to the usual standard with the seatbelts crossed on your seat" ... what the???

But ... if increasing turn around etc is in the pipeline, then that's good news. If I do see a real difference with less delays and cancellations over the next 6-12 months when I'm flying them with work, then I will consider them for personal flights in future as well.

I've heard DJ Cabin Crew tell me you have no idea how many people can't find their seatbelts if they don't cross them in the middle of the seat. It's something we've never noticed, but it does make like easier!!

Oh it definitely makes it easier but as it was the first time I'd heard it it came as a bit of a surprise! Doesn't bother me to do that, but I think after our delays a lot of people sighed loudly suggesting "why should we help when we're an hour and a half late"!

I can just imagine hearing a story like that... "Qantas puts passengers lives in danger with neglected safety standards."

Just as they say, by making the same abbreviations for Virgin is just turning them into Qantas. Which is the last thing they want to be. TBH I never liked the current QF Acronyms, they aren't very true I've found...
I agree! I refuse to use the QF Acronyms as they have nothing to do with the actual status (I actually find them derogatory and not funny in any way) and were created by a group of people who who were totally bored and had more than a few to drink....

That original meeting was before my time; but when I came across it I thought "This is for me" with the basic 'Strine methodology of taking the micky out of "elite"; making it more egalitarian so to speak.

I do and will continue to use those terms; I've been a w@nker or Scum for many a year and happily wear whatever badge with good humour.

+1 I avoid them as much as possible. At some stage we should organise a meeting for a new set. Before the Qantas Bar opens...:p

Well, in a word, yes. The problem I've had with DJ, is often what's seen as only a 1-2hour flight, turns into a 5hour ordeal, by the time the first flight is cancelled, and then the next flight gets delayed. This is a regular occurrence - everyone I work with has experienced it almost weekly. Last Thursday I was booked on a 6:15 SYD-MEL. Due in at 7:45, in could have been home by 8:30. After that flight was cancelled, I was moved to the 6:45, which departed at 8pm (would have been 7:45 but another 15min was added when the two airhead FA's took 15min to sort out a double seat allocation). Then after the baggage handlers sent the luggage to the wrong carousel and took another 15min to work it out, I wasn't home until 10:30 - two hours after the original time. So I go to bed stressed, and therefore don't sleep well, when I would have got a good couple of hours to relax and wind down had I been flying QF.

Yes I know QF have delays and issues, but in my experience it is an exception rather than a rule like it is with DJ.


There are a lot of delays into and out of Melbourne at the moment due to runway works.

Yes agreed, but I've done comparisons between the departures and arrivals on the days I've been delayed, and despite the excuses (usually air traffic control, one runway in Mel, and weather) QF has had not nearly as many issues. As an example, on one day in Nov last year there was a minor thunderstorm in Sydney. Every DJ flight for the afternoon was delayed at least 30-90min. QF had two flights delayed out of Sydney the entire day. How could a small storm impact one airline so much, and another not at all? There's more to it than the excuses they continually use.

I've had 8 DJ flights this year - out of those I've had two cancellations, plus 7 delays. How does that work?

I don't know how that works. 2 + 7 = 9 and not 8.

Out of 8 flights I was scheduled on, 2 were canceled and I was moved to two differed flights, so I still flew on 8 flights it's just that two weren't the original flights booked. Out of those 8 flights, 7 were delayed (including one of the flights I got moved to).

So, I was scheduled on 8 flights, flew on 8 flights, and experienced 2 cancels and 7 delays.

Other peoples experience may not and are not the same though.
My experience this year is quite different to yours.
Of 3 DJ flights I have had one that was late and 2 on time.
Of 5 QF flights I have had 2 that were late and 3 on time.
Of the 3 QF on time flights 2 of those were replacement for cancelled flights, so overall QF got me there as planned on 1 of 5 flights. One QF flight was so late that the 3 hr International connection we allowed in SYD was nearly insufficient.

Other peoples experience may not and are not the same though.
And we all have different experiences which do not really reflect the on-time performances quoted by the airlines. Perhaps the more you travel the more times you are likely to have cancellations and delays.

On DJ I had 8-10 flights last year and at least 70% were delayed in some way.

By the way I am not faring much better on QF either with an on-time rate of >25%-<50%.

And we can use every excuse on delays in the book until the cows come home but at the end of the day a delay is a delay and it does not make the person experiencing the delays feel any better....
