Hi there

Virgin Blue will add Olympic Dam to it's network from July 02, flights will operate 3xdaily (M-F) and 1xdaily (Sa/Su) and will be operated in conjunction with Alliance Airlines.

Bookings thru the DJ website and the flights earn Velocity points and lounge access is available at ADL for members and those on qualifying fares.

Cheers

Is this instead of rex, or as well as?

Interesting that at Mt Keith and Leinster formerly owned by WMC but now owned by BHP changed from QF to Alliance, now Olympic Dam from the same stable is changing to Alliance. .

Any idea what aircraft they will use?

I'd imagine it would have to be the Fokker 100 (unless Alliance has picked itself up some new aircraft). The flights carry non-standard DJ flight numbers 5*** and note that they are operated by Alliance, so a DJ 737 is off the cards.

... Actually, to correct myself, they have the Fokker 50 as well which is a turbo prop so perhaps thats more likely (given the F100's are noisy little Fokkers)

I thought it was too good to be true, Also OLP's runway would be too short.

But at least no more flying cigars.

REX are leaving the route from July 2 and the runway is longer than Harvey Bay so no issues with 737's or F100's, its 500ft shorter than Hamilton Island!

ahh - we called jetstream flying cigar, and metroliner flying pencil (being thinner and shorter I suppose).

Flying cigar = Metroliner?

Thanks Colin. Have you had the pleasure of flying into Broken Hill on one of these?

Or the Flying cough according to the BHP miners I met in Moranbah. :D

This is the only aircraft I have ever felt airsick in!

Not Broken Hill Reggie. Being in the marine business, Broken Hill is out of my domain. Port Lincoln, and Kingscote are more common destinations for me.
It's a pity QF abandoned KGC and PLO last year just when I was starting to rack up some points and SC's. 1,000 points and 10 sc's for a 70 mile flight costing (iirc) $69 was excellent value I reckon.

Is it correct now that other than Adelaide, QF don't fly within SA?

That's correct. QF affiliate, O,Connor airlines fly a few routes but REX has virtually no competition in SA at the moment.

I have done Broken Hill-ADL just the once in REX on one of those. Only marginally less comfortable than when I was flying myself in a Bulldog. Amazed that for the whole flight there were no electronic devices allowed and hand luggage was pretty much nil....
