Unusually tall cabin crew leaves airport agog

COMMUTERS at Melbourne Airport were agog yesterday when a flamboyant - and very tall - cabin crew strode through Terminal 3 towards the boarding gate for flight DJ 857. To celebrate Sydney's gay and lesbian Mardi Gras weekend, Virgin airlines had a special themed Melbourne-to-Sydney flight, complete with a drag queen cabin crew, dance routines and champagne at the boarding gate and the kind of in-flight entertainment one would normally find at the Greyhound Hotel.

Awesome! How hilarious would it be on that flight - it is certainly something different... good on Virgin Blue for supporting the GLBT community and the mardi gras!!

Haha I dont think my flight to sydney tonight will have FA like that :-(

I'm sure I'll be sick of drag queens by the end of the weekend anyway .

Wow, thats sort of weird in a really scary way

Thumbs up to virgin for such a wacky idea though

Cheers

Josh:p

I’d be a little shocked if I didn’t know about it and turned up to find that, but pretty good all the same!

I’ll be watching on Arena again this year.

I think you'll find there was also an official crew for the CASA mandated safety duties......

Air NZ do a similar thing with their "pink flight". I can't remember which Mardi Gras it is done for and which sector, though.

Passengers are specifically told of this flight and have an opportunity to book for it. Then they are also invited to the pre-flight antics which none to surprisingly involve the cabin crew and a good show.

I cant think of many things more irrelevant to the vast majority of Pax than this.

What's next a grand finals ruby league crew? An AFLs final 8 theme.

Frankly there is only one thing relevant in the air and that is customer service not wacky ideas that get advertising.

Save that for charter flights....

Oh, come on! Virgin Group is a sponsor of Mardi Gras, it's harmless fun. The idea is completely unoriginal and was first performed by Air New Zealand last year with Kathy Griffin on board. judging by 'My Life on the D-List' on Arena it wasn't a full flight....

I see nothing wrong with it-then again my biggest role on stage was Swan Lake in a pink tutu and footie boots.

Would've been a fun flight.

Mardi Gras in SYD is on my to-do list... one day...

I think you'll find the vast majority of the pax on this flight booked it specifically (if not everyone) and I think this pretty much does act like a charter flight. This is a once a year event for the airline to get their sponsorship mileage while giving people something completely different to standard 'serious' flying...

I think you'll find that many many many australian flights are basically 'rugby' flights full of drunk supporters and sometimes players...

This is a safe, fun and clever way for an airline to support a part of our community that they believe in

Lets see this for what it is, and let people have fun

To get on this flight you had to book it through Blue Holidays and it was $199 for a one way flight to Syd which had some inclusions (drinks & goodie bags...) with the price.

So no chance for the unexpecting pax to get on this flight not knowing what they were in for.

I think it was a great marketing idea from DJ and talking to a good friend of mine who is a DJ FA there was very little trouble finding an appropriate crew for such a flight, go figure?????

I disagree with you, but each to their own views.

A bit of harmless fun from DJ and I like it, even though I wasn't on that particular flight. Though I once flew on MEL Cup day and the DJ crew were wearing jockey outfits, again it's a bit of fun and it sure beats the boring monotomy of a regular flight.

That does change things considerably in relation to this flight... For me personally again this is not a flight I would have taken through choice.

There was a small segment shown during the Mardi Gras coverage of what it was like on-board the special flight. They certainly all knew about it ;)

This flights was being sold at an extra price so pax on the flight would have been aware of the special nature of the flight and expecting something flamboyant.

Good fun in the skies, althought not for me.

I love the fact that its something different, when you think that 80% of the aviation staff are made up of Gay and Lesbians anyway.

In saying that I wish my Friday night flight down to Sydney would of been that fun, a coughy Drag-queen would provide better service sometimes!
