The starting costs are very cheap when i went through mine that was the fee to sit down and start sorting it all out

Divorces get costly with too much emotion and anger and greed. With common sense and conciliatory approach, it can be achieved comparatively cheaper. Avoid lawyers, I'd say.

- reconciliation, even if remote

Not sure if marriages in other jurisdictions can be brought to an end. And whether recognised (beyond Europe).

I did my own divorce in 2001. No lawyers, just filed the papers with the Federal Magistrates Services (not Family Law Court even though the papers are identical except the name on the top), and Federal Magistrate Services was half the price (I think $250). She wanted the house, and I wanted the kids (only 9 and 8 at the time). I thought that was a great swap, and even though my social life was limited whilst they were growing up, I would not have changed a thing. I don't know why people argue over material things when the 'little things' are much more important. Although by using the divorce hotel at lease you get a weekend away, same result, just costs a lot more.
