Just wondering if anybody has noticed that according to the Points Calculator, Ayers Rock is 1202 Miles from Melbourne and Alice Springs is 1156 Miles - yet the route map (and any other map) clearly shows that Alice Springs is further from Melbourne than Ayers Rock.
Any ideas why?
Cheers,
Paul.

According to Great Circle Mapper, MEL-ASP is 1,154 miles see here

and MEL-AYQ is 1,185 miles see here

So Ayres Rock is in fact further from Melbourne than Alice Springs.

Not sure why there is a 17 mile discrepancy between GCM and the QF distance.

I wouldn't trust QF map to be accurate. A proper map shows while Alice Springs is a little more north, Uluru is quite a bit further west.

And those extra few miles are quite significant. MEL-AYQ return awards cost 36,000 pts, whereas MEL-ASP return awards are 24,000 points.

The current sale makes MEL-AYQ possible for $189 (great value), but it is significantly more expensive to get to or from ASP than AYQ - even when specials are not taken into account. (Plus the MEL-AYQ gives an extra 5 SCs.)

Also - the scheduled 3 hour flight to AYQ from MEL gives you a movie - but not when travelling to Alice Springs - as it is less than 3 hour duration.

Cheers,
Paul.

Makes award flights to ASP one of the better value economy award in terms of c per point (around 1.9c per point when taxes are taken into account compared to the AYQ flight at around 0.8c per point). Even better when they offer 20% off which I took advantage of in January.

On my flights they played movies on both MEL-ASP and ASP-MEL sectors, although on arrival in ASP the movie didn't finish until a minute or so after the door opened, but they did keep it going to the end.

Not sure if the pricing has changed (too lazy to look it up) but when I went to ASP & AYQ from MEL I went via SYD for the same fare as direct (ignoring a few $ extra in taxes) and extra points and SCs (both destinations in zone 3 from SYD + also get MEL-SYD)
