I'm a confused by some of the evens... were these separate tickets? With a 1hr40mins connection I'm thinking it is should all be one ticket, and boarding passes should have been issued all the way through. If so, why was there a ticket check at that stage? If they were separate tickets, what's the minimum connecting time at Lima? With just 40 mins they may have missed that.

Were other flights available to the USA? Business class flights out of the USA can still be had for $4000 one way, not $14000 they ended up paying, per person.
