I've found that some hotels that tends to happen, but others not.... often I'm asked where I would like to sit. I guess it depends on how busy it is and what tables may already be booked/reserved!

I haven't experienced any discrimination with regards to table seating arrangements. Just find eating out alone rather appalling. I have had this experience eating alone in several states & countries and find no pleasure in the matter.
Depending on the grade of restaurant, most of the better ones will accommodate your requests.

I actually enjoy dining alone sometimes. I prefer to sit at the bar counter though, even at some up market restaurants.

My two favourites, Polo Grill $ Bobby's in Vero Beach, both pretty upmarket establishments accommodate my requests so long as the restaurants are not too busy.
