Different point value for return flight

Can anyone tell me why a MCY TO MEL flight is 895 base points and MEL to MCY 995 base points?

Points are based on spend, not on distance, for domestic flights.

Same fare type does not mean same cost, Melbourne has extra charges hence extra points for instance.

So does that mean points earn is determined by base fare (excluding all charges) and not the total one-way fare paid? I don't travel VA so not across Velocity earn rates.

If the cost of each sector is different the points earn for each flight is different.
For example:
MCY - MEL is $135 = 675 points
MEL - MCY is $125 = 625 points

The only fee that is not included in points earn is the credit card fee of $7.70
Basically if you take the amount you paid for the return trip (subtract $7.70 if paid by CC) and multiply that by 5 it should equal the total points earned for the return trip.

MCY - MEL $179
MEL - MCY $199

This has me curious as I was a bit confused about my flights from Friday.

I had a saver fare in the morning SYD- BNE which was around $110. I had a flexi fare on return that afternoon which was around $230.

For both flights I got 942 base points. Then another 707 bonus points as Gold.

It's an odd quirk post sabre. If you book a round trip flight you get 1/2 the total points each way if on the one booking. I think there's some to game this but i haven't thought enough about how yet

That indicates 1884 + 707 = 2591.

$110+$230=$340, @ 5 Velocity base points per $ that's 1700. Gold get a 75% bonus which should be 1275 for a total of 2975.

Maths does add up in a way. We only have an approximation of the cost of flights.

For a Gold 707 points is 75% of 942 points. So if the points are the same for both flights it would be a total of 1884 points for the return or $377 for the return flights.

Which is $34 more than quoted.

Ok, that would be 707 each way bonus.

Making total point earn 3298 ... maybe that's what 777 was referring to with the word 'game'.

That is how I understood the post.
