Different flight options using gift voucher

So I've used the first of my Xmas gift vouchers this evening and prior to booking the flights I ensured that I wasn't going to be charged any more than by booking the flights and just paying for them with CC.

The routing was MEL-SYD-BKK return in August in J.

On my original dummy booking the earliest MEL-SYD flight was at 0630 hours. However, when I used my gift voucher I was offered (and accepted) the 0600 MEL-SYD flight.

Why does this happen? In this instance it worked for me but I have previously had it the other way around and had to ring up and ask for the earlier flight.

Voucher bookings still use the old (some may say better) booking system; presumably the new one has been programmed to minimize connection times more drastically than the old one.

The current Qantas booking system makes no sense with the flights offered. Some searches minimise connection while other searches sees every single connection in the day to the MEL-SIN JQ flight.
