We are planning to book cx flight into Bali from Hong Kong which arrives at 2.30 pm, and then fly out on Jetstar back to Aus on same day leaving 11pm. Jetstar flight on sale so if we miss it will be hard to reschedule cheaply.
As these will be separate bookings we will need to collect luggage/clear customs etc and then check in again. Is this feasible and what are the airport facilities like? We will be travelling with our 3 kids (14, 12 and 9)

Unfortunately you will have to pay the Visa on Arrival again (US$25) if you don't have one already (possibly from the outbound trip?). Otherwise I'd have though that 14:30 to 23:00 would be enough time for a contingency.

There are left luggage facilities at the airport outside the terminal about half way between arrivals and departures (intl.) My suggestion though is prob look at finding a cheap hotel nearby the airport and at least you can go a relax/lie-down/have a swim.

To be honest there isn't much in the way of facilities / entertainment for that length of time. The departure lounge has quite a few duty free stores, but nothing that will keep the kids happy unless they like high priced massages!

Plus the departure tax of Rp150,000 (~16 AUD) per person

for that length of stopover I would be booking some some simple accommodation.... having a swim in the pool and a meal and maybe an hour or two sleep.

on departure, if you don't already have lounge access, you can get it fairly cheaply. just pay on entry.

i have arrived on the cx flight a couple of times. each time there were lengthy queues for immigration. we booked the 'meet and greet' service... they meet you at the door of the plane and expedite the visa and immigration. well worth it if your flight is at a peak time. the fee used to be around usd30, in addition to the visa fee.

for that length of time I would not stay at the airport. it really doesn't have much to offer (lots of people sitting on the floor in the departures area waiting for flights)

there are some hotels very close to the airport. they will even pick you up and drop you off.

There are lounges that you can pay for entry into at Denpasar Aiport. As with the others advice I would book a room at a hotel nearby, the area that you want is Tuban which is right next door to the airport.

garuda Indonesia used to have a hotel close to the airport they used as a stopover hotel for pax connecting to Europe... like a 10 min drive or so. if I was at home I could have dug out the brochure... but it was very pleasant, two pools, nice restaurant. maybe someone will recall the name.

certainly worth it and back then the stopovers were almost identical in timing to the OPs one (arrival about 3pm and depart around 11)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

With kids I would do as someone else suggested and go to a hotel nearby for the afternoon and have a swim and dinner. Patra JASA (maybe name has changed) is really close by on Tuban. Spending that many hours in an airport will run you ragged.

The airport is a hole. Try to escape at your earliest, and return only when check-in is open

The airport has been rebuilt recently and may already be operational. But still escape for a few hours, you have plenty of time.

Premier Lounge located airside which is used by CX, SQ, MH, CA etc etc can be accessed for 250,000 IDR pp ( around $25AUD ), however as other members have suggested, for a little more you can spend the hours relaxing by a pool, having a Bintang and nomming on Nasi Goreng in Tuban.

Thanks everyone. Extremely helpful advice. My 14yo has now convinced us to spend 3 days in Bali as a mini stopover! This will avoid the long changeover time!!

Even better - you have a wise 14 y.o!

The new terminal for International will not open until September or October.

It should be done in time by the ASEAN meeting in October.
