From news.com.au:

US AIRLINE Delta will offer unlimited free booze on its flights to Australia as the trans-Pacific airfare war heats up.

hmm, I am not sure how limited the free booze is on the other airlines flying the route? especially if you include NZ and AC as trans-Pacific options. UA and V Australia may represent 50% of the carriers flying LAX-SYD, but they hardly represent a significant proportion of passengers flying between Australia and USA.

Ah yes, nothing like 12 hours of drinking, then jumping in a rental car......

Do QF NOT have free booze in whY? I really don't see why this is news...

QF do, but some other competitors on the route do not.
The article mentions that V Australia and United provide the first drink free and then charge for extras. But I suggest that more than 80% of economy class passengers travelling trans-Pacific are served free drinks. But free drinks is unusual for US-based airlines on international routes.

It's all part of marketing, to make the product look good! I dare say that even on Qantas the bulk of passengers in Y would not have more than a couple of drinks either. It is likely that this would not cost them that much overall.

indeed the cost is managed by the speed of delivery ;)
