Delayed baggage on self-connection?

I've currently got a trip on QR booked flying MEL-DOH-CDG, and I need to book a separate domestic flight SYD-MEL and I assume that neither VA nor QF will check me through from SYD.

In the event that I get to MEL on time for my next flight, but my checked baggage does not, what should I do? Will VA/QF reunite me with my bags if I submit a PIR even though the international flight has nothing to do with them?

No lived experience with either question, but if one of the tickets (either the SYD-MEL or the international leg) is a QF award booking, QF say they will check bags through to final destination on separate tickets if the sectors are operated by a OW carrier.

I suspect if this is a policy that is difficult to have exercised at check in, somebody on AFF will say so soon!

I’m fairly certain they’ll be delivered anywhere in the world once the bags are delayed.

Plenty of people have onward bookings with other carriers, if the airline failed to fly your bag with you then all bets are off, they have to get them to you wherever you are, not just the port you were ticketed to.
