I'm flying from Puerto Vallerta, Mexico (PVR) to New York (LGA), via Houston (IAH). The PVR - IAH flight was delayed by an hour. Landing in IAH I had to go through customs and re-check my bags which delayed me by another 30 mins. I ended up missing the flight to LGA.

United rebooked me for a flight tomorrow morning and gave me a budget hotel room for tonight and US$40 in meal vouchers. However, I had an expensive hotel in New York booked and I'm missing a night staying there.

Can I be compensated by United for this missed night?

No, they are providing you with a replacement hotel already. Travel insurance may compensate you depending on T&C. Definitely should contact the hotel though, as they may be lenient (99% chance they will not), but more importantly if it’s a multi night stay they might cancel your whole stay if you no show on the first night without letting them know.

A similar thing happened to me last tear at DFW. QF and AA at the time denied me any help with onward losses of travel and accomodation. Both airlines said my delay wasnt their fault as i was delayed at Customs etc. I ended up paying $450 USD for a room at the Hyatt.
QF did however acknowledge that i was delayed which i used to get my money back via travel insurance.
Hopefully you have fully comprehensive TI that you can fall back on, however check that the excess on your premium isn’t about the same cost as your hotel room otherwise it could all be a bit of a waste of time.
