My distressed son in law has rushed to the US to help deal with his father's estate and has found 200K miles in his father's UA account, which is still accessable. SIL has asked for any quick advice on using them.

Firstly, I'll need to ensure they don't expire as FIL was off flying for quite a while.

Or, if you know of a good reference on some other thread/forum.

SIL quotes silly high transfer price. For a start he'd like to get an upgrade back to AS, have no idea how feasible that is as his status would minimal, or maybe 'silver'. Cancellable flights seems a good idea if allowed.

Transfer to family member? Book cancellable flights in someone else's name?

Just bumping this up in case there are some out there who can give us some thoughts. (I have no UA miles so the UA site won't tell me anything). My distressed son in law has rushed to the US to help deal with his father's estate and has found 200K miles in his father's UA account from CC spend, expiring in August. That cc is cancelled.

SIL has asked for any quick advice on using the points. SIL is silver w' UA, and has said he'd like an upgrade on the way back as a starter. He himself has a few points.

Apparently, crediting over to another account is very expensive, so is hoping to use them from his father's acct.

In the event of the death or divorce of a Member, United may, in its sole discretion, credit all or a portion of such Member’s accrued mileage to authorized persons upon receipt of documentation satisfactory to United and payment of applicable fees.

Yes thanks, SIL said the "payment of applicable fees" might be 1.125 cents per mile. And, he is loathe to alert the airline to his dad's death as these are a lot of points for him to risk.

I suspect seeking advice on FlyerTalk may be more beneficial on this one.
