Death of a 747 :(

Hi there all, especially those of us who are romantic 747 - lovers.

On my last Qantas flight I watched a documentary they have - it is on an old 747 being decommissioned - ie broken down for spare parts.

I know my love of 747's is a foolish one, but it really hurt to watch some of the show. After they bled the last fuel out of the tanks, they did a final switch-off of the plane's electronics. It really felt like watching a being die

Apart from the nostalgia / emotions, it is not a bad little short doc - shows exactly what happens when a plane gets cannibalized. Look for it in the documentary part of the TV section of the IFE.

When I first made it into business class on the Qantas 747 I really thought I had made it.
We have been going on QF12 to New York from Los Angeles and back so it will be interesting to see how long that lasts. Generally it is late taking off and the interior is pretty dated now.

Hopefully that won’t be the immediate fate of the -400ERs. They are very nice aircraft, and I think Boeing made a mistake in not keeping them available prior to the -8 actually being ready....as opposed to promised.
