Dead man found in landing gear

Re: Dead possible stowaway found on Delta in Narita

It gets mighty cold outside the plane on longhaul flights. I don't recall what the 'record' temperature I've seen is, but on my flight HKG-HEL recently the outside temp was as low as -78 deg C.

Does make you wonder how he got into that bay. Was he an airport employee I wonder? Assuming he did enter at New York, it does show a breakdown in security procedure there.

That's cold!

The lowest outside temperature I have ever seen is -71℃, flying JFK-PEK last February.

Certainly wouldn't have been pleasant inside the wheel-bays. I imagine that the bodies of these unfortunate individuals would be frozen solid after 14 hours. Not pretty.

This sort of story pops up every so often.
IIRC the last one was ex-Lagos.

Not pleasant.

Dead man found in landing gear | News.com.au

JAPANESE authorities have found the body of a man in the landing gear of a Delta airliner that arrived in Tokyo from New York.

The man, who was of dark complexion and dressed only in blue jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, was carrying no passport or personal belongings.

A mechanic found the body in the landing gear bay of the Boeing 777 after Delta Flight 59 landed at Tokyo's Narita International Airport at about 6:05 p.m. Sunday, a Chiba prefecture police spokesman said.

Not a smart idea.

Sorry, please delete this thread then. The article was only posted on news.com.au at 7:07am so I didn't think or see any other threads on it!

I read a couple of years back that this happens 2 or 3 times a year on the approach to Heathrow -- a cold, dead body found in the fields approximately below the point where the landing gear doors open.

Apart from the cold and lack of oxygen I would think there is hardly any room for a person to fit in the wheel bay of a modern aircraft.
