Hi Guys

Have a spare day in the big city next week and looking at doing something different and getting out of the city. Anyone recommend any sort of daytrip ex NYC that is a bus trip or train trip. Done the Woodbury common trip before but looking for something non shopping.

It's a long day but I believe there are Niagara Falls tours for a day. I think there are even some fly up and back tours. I actually did a two day tour.

Or you could catch the train to Philadelphia for the day and look around. A great way to get a taste of the city.

We travelled to Washington for the day by train. Managed to see most if the must-do's on their hoho bus which stops right outside Union Square. Highly recommended.

Niagara Falls would be a very long day. The train trip from NY to Albany is very scenic, along the banks of the Hudson River all the way. However I do not think there is much to do in Albany except to catch a return train.

I have done a train trip to New Haven - not very exciting. While I have not done it, train to Philadelphia might be a great idea.

I would get a car and tour the Hudson Valley.lots of things of interest-Kykuit-a Rockefeller mansion,Hyde Park-FDR's home and library,Phillipsburg manor a mill, farm and museum from the 17th century.Vanderbuilt mansion,Sunnyside-Washinton irving's place(rip Van winkle and Sleepy hollow),Storm king sculpture park and of course West Point.
Some great restaurants there too.You can catch the train and a bus does run to some of the attractions.

Also by train you can get to the Phillip Johnson Glass house in Connecticut-

I agree with this.

I've done Kykuit and Philipsburg as a day trip via the train and the ride itself is great as it hugs the coastline of the Hudson in parts. Very picturesque.

You can also do the Walkway over the Hudson. See Walkway Over The Hudson

If you want another city, Philadelphia is a good option.

I don't recommend DC or Niagara Falls as day trips from NYC - too much travelling imo.

Travelling to DC was quite doable. A long day but we saw so many sights that we continue to see on TV basically every day, it was actually a highlight of our quick trip to NY. And we don't have the need to return to DC now. Even managed 40 minutes at Aeronautical Smithsonian to touch moon rock.
