Hi,
I am wanting to do a day trip from MEL to anywhere (in Australia and maybe even NZ if it's worth it), that doesn't cost too much and thought I could turn it into a milage run, which I have never done before so I'm not sure how to work out if it is a good milage run. I'm hoping some of you guys could lead me into the right direction.
Thanks for any help offered, Ben.

Hi,
i was aiming more for points as I don't have any SC right now, or do you think it would be better to go for SCs?

Hi Ben170292 and welcome to AFF. I guess we need some more information. Do you want to earn on QF or VA? How much money/points are you able to spend? How long do you have to travel and is there a date when it needs to be done by for your current membership year?

Or do you just want to travel somewhere for the day?

There are lots of very knowledgeable people here who can assist you with any combination of the above but we really do need some guidance so we can point you in the right direction. :)

You would never really earn more value of points by flying than what you spend on earning them would you??? Perhaps if you were inline for getting some bonus points but even then... Points earned from flying are really only worth it if you are doing the flying anyway... SCs are a different story and that's why they are called Status Credit runs... But these are better for if you do quite a bit of flying...

For example flying from Perth to say Sydney, even if you go via Adelaide etc will result in about 6000 points or so in economy for what, $400???

You could go and get a credit card from a bank with several of them offering 16,000 or so for a sign on fee of say $95?? Once you have got the points after 2-3 months you could then cancel the card and get a 3/4 pro rata refund on the sign on fee and so get 16,000 points for around $25-30???

Hi Ben
from your wording it sounds like you want to go enjoy a day trip, as also mentioned by Hvr, & it would also be nice to also get some miles. As opposed to the purpose being to get miles, but you only have a day free.

We all start somewhere with the learning curve of miles & points & status credits! Read up on those links from Mwenenzi - that will keep you out of mischief for a lazy hour or 2 ;).

I'll run with the day trip idea. Choose QF / VA, whichever you think will meet your needs best for destinations over the next year. I see you are a QFF, but recall you mentioned VA over on MilePoint.

Look at doing a milk run to get somewhere, turnaround & head home. You'll earn points plus status credits on each sector with QF (provided it is on QF & not Jetstar lower fares). On VA they look at final destination & post points & SC based on start to final only, IIRC. For all of us it is our own unique calculation of time spent, plane type, journey, destination, miles/points & status credits earned, and dollar cost that makes us decide on each trip.

Also, check out the idea of a Woolies Everyday Rewards Card, to earn extra QF points. You can join online & quote your existing QFF #.
and consider Casanovawa's suggestion of a credit card that gives a sign up points bonus, plus earns points from ongoing spend.
Then there's also hotel stays where you can earn points to your preferred airline. Also car hire, and many other types of purchases. Pay on the card to earn Points plus flash your FF card to get extra points.

It just all sort of multiplies once you get started. Welcome :)
