I’m off to Cairns on a status run next week and have 2 days there. Don’t want to drive anywhere.

can any locals ( @Limewood are you still there?) suggest a good day cruise out to the reef? Not much interested in snorkeling, but will if it’s a good opportunity. More interested in a good operator, good itinerary and with some food & wine along the way somewhere.

BTW, is there any ‘entry permit’ stuff for QLD for someone who hasn’t been near a hot spot?

I'm interested in this too for later in the year. Although my interest is very much on the snorkelling side. Also open to departures from Port Douglas.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

WRT outer reef trips from Port Douglas (and from Cairns although I haven't done that for 10+ years), I recommend always booking on a boat that offers scuba diving even if you are only planning to snorkel.

The snorkel only trips tend to take you to a pontoon, in shallower water (max depth 3 meters or so), so you generally end up really only seeing one section of the reef, and have more non-swimmers about who tend to be less calm and can scare away some of the fish.

On a dive boat, you tend to stop at 3 different sections of the reef, in areas where you can swim over reefs that are 30cms - 2 meters below you, and also swim along reef edge where it drops off into much deeper open water to see more reef sharks and larger groupers etc The contrasting different sites has you seeing more over the course of the day.

Quicksilver Group have a few boats (i cant remember if I went on the Silversonic or Silver Swift), they were looking a little tired (mostly needing new carpet) last time I was there in 2019 BUT they had the best itinerary with the best (non pontoon) stops. Their included lunch had a good mix of hot and cold options including prawns. I also used them in 2016 (I was supposed to dive that trip but my ear drum burst on the flight up and I was restricted to snorkeling).

The other advantage on a dive boat is you can do an into dive at one stop, and snorkel at the other two.

Inner reef trips where you are snorkeling within sight of land (often from boat to an island) it doesn't matter if a snorkel only boat. The last Inner reef trip I did the the coral seemed much more bleached, thee was less fish life and poorer visibility - but sometimes more turtles.

If you have time do two day trips do both an inner and outer reef trip. If only have time for one, do outer reef.

And if your looking to head inland for a break from the sun and sea then this foodie trip was a lot of fun: Outback Tasting Tours - Port Douglas

** Edited to add if you are not a confident swimmer most boats offer life vests. The outer reef trips wont stop anywhere where you can stand up in the water (your not allowed to stand on the reef for obvious reasons, and its too deep stand on sand).

Thanks. I imagine the same applies for cruises ex Cairns?

Edit: also, would you tend to pay more for scuba cruises, for the scuba facilities/ expertise, than snorkeling cruises?

Yes it does, it is just a matter of googling to find the right company and trip. I have done outer reef trip from Cairns including a dive and snorkel but it was about 12 years ago so cant remember who it was with.

Done the googling, but can’t tell a good ‘un from a bad ‘un, so hoping for a bit of local knowledge. But your note above was very helpful.

Without the hoards of foreign tourists, less likely to have to deal with non-swimmers on any trip now as most locals can swim. So that may make Great Barrier Reef Tour | Quicksilver Cruises ok now.

Just checked my email for receipts:

I have definitely done this inner reef one: Wavedancer Low Isles - Great Barrier Reef Sailing Tour (visiblity wasnt great) however the equivalent from Cairns appears to be Sail the Great Barrier Reef with Ocean Spirit Cruises | Dive & Snorkel | Michaelmas Cay and looks a bit nicer if it resumes running.

For outer reef from Port Douglas I've done Silversonic (https://www.silverseries.com.au - website appears to be broken) and its Cairns equivalent which is the Silverswift.

I'm pretty sure I've also done Snorkel & Scuba Dive the Great Barrier Reef with Poseidon Cruises - Australia.

If snorkelling is your priority I recommend Silverswift/Silversonic (and indeed I will redo the trip out of Cairns this July)

Pricing & Fares - Silverseries Scuba Dive & Snorkel

I have been on both both boats/trips and both were excellent.

You can book direct via its website or via agents. Discount of various sizes can be had via autoclubs or others.

Note that it does not run everyday at present (which seems quite common for many Cairns Regional activities at present.) and so make sure you select a day that it operates on if booking online.

They are sister ships that operate out of Port Douglas or Cairns to different regions of the reef.

They are fast = more snorkelling time and also less time on the water in between which is where people can get sea sick, if they are likely too. Speaking of which I always take a sick sickness tablet prior to your trip as as it is not worth risking your trip, and I am someone who often charters smaller yachts for upto 14 days at a time.

On my first reef trip out of Cairns almost forty rears ago I looked around and noticed that there was a lot of crew. I asked a crew member why, and they gave me a knowing grin and said you'll see. Sure enough about 30 minutes later there were passengers barfing everywhere and the crew active at making sure they did not go overboard or make too much mess etc. Fortunately the boats these days tend to have a kinder motion. but I still recommend taking a tablet.

Anyway back on snorkelling.

The Silverswift/Silversonic have roaming licenses and have a larger number of sites that they can visit. They visit three outer reef locations and will choose 3 that best suit the weather and se conditions of the day.

You swim off the boat's swim platforms. They do not have pontoons, but this to me is a good thing.

The food is ok but the priority of these trips is the snorkelling/diving and not the food. So if you really want the big bang up buffet lunch experience go on one of the cruises to the pontoons. Better food, but worse snorkelling.

Over the decades I have gone on many snorkelling trips in the region from Mission Beach all the way up to one out of Cape Tribulation, as well as as far south as from Airlie Beach. For a good day out snorkelling, the Silver Series I would rate as the surest bet for good snorkelling. I still enjoyed the others though.

For those with young children, some that include the inner reefs and sandy cays may be a better option.

To mix things up we are doing snorkelling trip that we have not done before, though I expect the actual snorkelling component to be tame. and so are doing it more as a rounded fun day out to a location that we have not been to be before.

For my favourite non-snorkelling trip in the region I highly recommend.

Tip: Do it out of Mission Beach as it makes for a much shorter day.

My wife and I are doing our tenth Tully River Rafting trip together for her 60th Birthday Present ;) There used to be two suppliers, but it looks like one took over the other.

Good itinerary: Just on this. The reef trips, and especially the outer reef trips, tend to be more about the destination (snorkelling/diving/platforms etc) and not so much about enjoying the trip there and back. If you just want a pleasant day out and are ok with ok snorkelling then one of the inner reef / cay trips may be better for you.

Depending on the size of the swell of the day, eating and drinking a lot does not end well for some and moreso on the outer reef trips..

On the snorkelling day trip boats scuba is an extra cost, so those that dive pay extra.

However there also are dedicated dive (scuba) boats and trips that are for divers only, and the prices reflect that.

On the Silver boats:

I just had a look at the wind and wave height forecast:

From that forecast, conditions will be likely to be on the unpleasant side. The wave height combined with strong winds will make it more difficult and less pleasant (perhaps unpleasant for snorkelling). ie choppy water makes it hard for snorkelling.

Plus the boat trip out and back will be rougher.

Fantastic, thanks. Would not have thought of that. Thanks also for other tips. Thanks also to @Lynda2475 for those tips 😊

My pleasure.

I tend to not book my trips till I have a good idea of the likely conditions.

Most of the trips will still run when conditions are not very good. They are businesses and want the income.

Nil to light winds and sunny days make for an ideal trip. Indeed a perfect day will be blissful. So I try and look for that. Many times of the year will have breeze most days though. ie I love bareboating in July in The Whitsundays as you can really on strong SE most days that make for good sailing.

Though you only have 2 days.

Moderate winds will still be ok, but you will start to get chop.

Above 15 knots one would have to question the enjoyment factor and particularly for snorkelers. Divers are less effected, though they still get the bumpy travel.

I travel with my own snorkel, which is shaped to minimise water entry, but the ones the boats issue will often have people gulping in saltwater in choppy conditions. Having said that if it is too windy I do not book, but Mother Nature can fickle and so you can get caught out.

This site allows you to check conditions and also the tides.

Remember too that the wind out at the snorkelling locations may be quite different to that in Cairns or on the mainland. Even moreso at your accommodation as you may be sheltered from the wind.

For snorkelers I would also try and not be out at the sites if it is high tide (Does not matter for divers) as what you may want to see may bea lot deeper. Though complete low tide can also mean that you cannot swim over some sections of reef (with 3 locations the cruise company will normally factor that in to their planning).
