Copy of email received today from my Account Manager at Telstra.

Hi Everyone

The last week or so I have had a number of enquiries regarding large bills for mobile services used overseas.

Please if you or a member of your team is going overseas and planning on using a mobile service let us know as we need to set up a International Data Plan for usage and explain that if you have a Smartphone the roaming may have to be deactivated.

Blackberrys/ Iphones etc are designed to connect to the network for upgrades/ downloads when switched on so you may be charged.

This will save a lot of time and money when the bill comes!

Thanks

Probably better off putting this here: Communication & Internet

:)

And last time I checked, these 'international data roaming plans' were shocking value. $160 - which includes a data allowance of 60MB (charged per KB or part) which equates to $900 worth of included data to use in selected countries for 30 days (based on them charging $15/mb).

As per the linked threads above, many other better (faster and cheaper) options for roaming with data.
