Dash 8 - Seat question

Hi all, this is my first post so please excuse me if this is not an appropriate question but I've been a lurker for so long that I'm just pleased to have a valid question to ask (well it is to me!!)
I'm travelling with my mother to Devonport in a couple of weeks on the QF2051 (De Havilland DHC-8 Series 300 ) return QF2058 (De Havilland DHC-8 Dash 8) - I'm wondering if these seats are bigger than larger planes. My mother is a biggish woman so I'm hoping that we won't have any awkward moments (it was hard enough to get her to agree to fly - I certainly don't want her embarrassed in any way) - I think she'll just need a seatbelt extension as she carries her weight in front......Do I ask for this when we board or beforehand?

Being 2+2 config that may help you.
Been a while since i have been on a Dash-8 but seem to remember them being ok.

1B i think used to be my fav seat, get to talk to the cabin crew during take off and landing since the sit right in front of you. And leg room.

1 Bravo is OK - an aisle seat but opposite the FA and 1 Alpha has little legroom. I would ask for 1 Charlie and Delta. More legroom for both of you. Only problem with both row 1 and row 10 on the Dash 8 300 series is that they are exit rows and if your mum can't assist in an emergency she won't be allowed to sit there. If this prevents her from using these rows - try row 12 - the back row. Check in early and talk it over with the check in staff! BTW welcome to the forum.

thanks for the replies! - Mum won't be able to assist in an emergency so the exit rows are out....although at 6ft I quite enjoy them!!

I was going to do a pre-check in and just do a bag drop-off but now thinking that it might be worthwhile discussing options with the checkin staff.

I find the Dash-8 has a little more legroom, although seats are narrower, than some of the larger aircraft. If the load on the aircraft is light then allocate a row each and lifting the armrest makes the seat much more comfortable.

As a comparison it definitely has more legroom than the new E170 jets and on the Dash-8 I can stretch my legs out without my shins knocking the seat in front.

She may not need a seatbelt extension. I would only ask for one if she definitely needs it after boarding.

Also I would try to get one of the seats down the back, row 12 is good, as it appears to be a more comfortable and relaxing flight.

Both 1B and 1C are OK but the tray table, as it is attached to the armrest, can be a hassle if you are laterally challenged.

Agree that 1A has very little legroom. Also 1C and 1D can be a little uncomfortable if someone is seated in 1E and 1F.

Just a quick update re: Dash 8 flights from MEL to DEV.

Had fantastic flights - no turbulence whatsoever! I didn't think to take notice of the plane models but MEL - DEV had 12 rows 2x2 and DEV - MEL had 9 rows 2x2.......a bit smaller than what I thought they would be. Interestingly...the seats seemed a bit wider on the smaller plane although we needed a seatbelt extension on the way home - perhaps just a slight variation of the seating layout. All in all a very successful flight for mum & I!!

The 9-row version is a Dash 8-200 and the 12-row version is a Dash 8-Q300.
