Thanks for all the replies everyone. I got to Darwin Airport at six in the morning, went through security as did my carry on bags. Then to my surprise the bar was open and they sold me a boxed Darwin Stubby. As I had already gone through security there was absolutely no problem as I simply zipped it up in my carry on bag and boarded the plane. Arrived in Sydney 4 hours later just in time for my friends 40th - no prizes for guessing what his present was - a Darwin Stubby. So the answer to the question is, that if you buy the stuff at the airport after security then nothing gets checked in any event. Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear everything went to plan with the Darwin Stubbie.

Just something to note though the screening you went through prior to going up the escalators was just the run of the mill security screening for knives etc. This is not where they confiscate LAGS.

Pax departing on international flights ex DRW or if you're on JQ58 to CNS (codeshares as QF272) turn right at the top of the escalators and go through the "International Departures" doors whereby you pass through the LAGs screening area then through Customs.
