Cruising choices with an active Pandemic

The video was uploaded by Iwata Kentaro (岩田健太郎), a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Kobe University. Dr. Iwata is a renowned and respected expert in infectious diseases who has dealt with the Ebola, Cholera and SARS outbreaks.

Dr. Iwata says that, in his travels treating infectious diseases worldwide, that he never had a fear of becoming infected with Ebola, Cholera, or SARS. “But inside Princess Diamond [sic], I was so scared. I was so scared of getting COVID-19 because there was no way to tell where the virus was.”

It’s likely you are correct but he is dealing with people whose first language isn’t English, he’s stressed to the maximum and the communications are getting very muddled.
They certainly seem to have been dealing with a lot of miscommunication and at times no communication. At times “we” in the outside world have more current information than they appear to have.

Yes, I posted that first thing this morning along with his credentials.

Radiance of the Seas just announced that it wont be making it's planned port call into Bali tomorrow. Decision from head office in Miami.

Royal Caribbean probably have the biggest presence in the Asian and particularly China region of the big cruise companies.

Royal are leaving things very late to make calls on ports and cancellations currently.

They have Spectrum on the way to Australia at present to do a few free cruises for emergency service workers. Scheduled cruises out of Shanghai cancelled till March 17th.

Quantum is currently in Port Klang Malaysia with only crew on board. Scheduled cruises cancelled till March 4th.

Voyager is due to leave Sydney on April 19th and arrive in Singapore on May 3rd.

A lot of people making enquiries about cancelling themselves or cancellations from Royal only to be told at this stage cruises are planned to go ahead. In fact still selling these.

Lots of complaints about late cancellations of previous cruises which left a lot of people unable to change their plans.

That’s interesting. Did they say why?

Have a few friends on board and so there has been quite a few posts on Facebook about the cancellation. Captain came on the PA today and announced that they were berthing in Bali only to clear the ship for tax reasons but passengers would not be allowed off the ship.

Apparently the Captain told them that head office in Miami had decided not to risk a visit there due to Corona risk and the subsequent possibility of then being denied access to Australian ports.

Good grief. That is taking an Abundance of caution to new levels. I wonder if Miami knows where Bali actually is and how many Australians are currently on holidays there.

Maybe they (US CDC) know something the Aust Govt doesn't....? I think Bali and Indonesia generally are black boxes when it comes to assessing risk based on capacity and capability to test, detect, manage and contain any contagion...

Among confirmed COVID-19 cases with recorded symptom onset (n=184), there were 33 (18%) with onset dates before 6 February, which was the first full day of quarantine, and 151 (82%) with onset dates on or after the 6th. A total 255 (48%) of the confirmed cases were asymptomatic when the respiratory specimen was collected. Of these, 8 were crew and 247 were passengers.

I was wondering about the Bali stop. My mother and some of her friends are joining Radiance of the Seas when it reaches Freo.

Watch the guy in red. Waiting outside Princess Diamond in Japan. A quarantine office or official.

Cruise lines will be struggling to show a profit this year.

Oceania wants to update you on the status of our scheduled cruises to Asia this year. Out of an abundance of caution and as a result of the uncertainty surrounding port entry and berthing availability in various destinations in Asia, Oceania Cruises has made the prudent decision to cancel all voyages in Asia through June 2020. Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is uncompromising and always our number one priority. Accordingly, the following sailings have been cancelled:
  • Nautica March 4, 2020 roundtrip Singapore
  • Nautica March 18, 2020 Singapore to Tokyo
  • Nautica April 3, 2020 roundtrip Tokyo
  • Insignia April 9, 2020 Cape Town to Singapore
  • Nautica April 13, 2020 Tokyo to Singapore
  • Nautica May 1, 2020 Singapore to Dubai
  • Insignia May 9, 2020 roundtrip Singapore
  • Insignia May 24, 2020 Singapore to Tokyo
  • Insignia June 11, 2020 Tokyo to San Francisco

The Nautica May 19, 2020 voyage from Dubai to Rome will operate as planned.
All guests on cancelled sailings will receive a 100% refund of the cruise fare paid along with a Future Cruise Credit, valid for any 2020 sailing, equal to 25% of the cruise fare paid to recognize their patience and understanding with this evolving situation. The Future Cruise Credit must be utilized for a 2020 voyage

I think it is more that they have little faith in Indonesia re Covid-19.

It only takes one infected to board the ship to cause it to go into a 14 Day Quarantine initially and to then be out of service after that.

Yes, valid points. Even the suspicion sends it into meltdown.

Two of the passengers evacuated to Australia were negative on Wednesday but have now tested positive. Meaning they were infectious on the ship, the bus and the flight here. One is an SA woman and she is being medivacced to the RAH this afternoon for full quarantine. Thank goodness for the 14 day quarantine because now every one of them has potentially had contact with a known sufferer.
