Hi all. Just FYI, Crikey.com is seeking your Qantas stories. If you were 'match fit' but didn't get what you expected (or perhaps you did but not in a good way), they are seeking stories:

You're welcome.

So many errors in the article including:

Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that Joyce sacked 6000 staff during the pandemic and hasn’t managed to replace them (you may remember them — the staff that check you in, deal with your bags, get you on the plan and deal with your calls and complaints)
The check-in staff were not sacked, they were offered VR and happily took it, along with many other check-in staff who just had enough and left the company.
The check-in side of staff, they have recruited over 120 in Melbourne and around 100 in Sydney over the past 10 months.

I also haven't seen any pictures or media footage of 'chaos' at Qantas terminals in the past few days, they have been solely focused on VA in MEL or VA/JQ in SYD.

I doubt that they "happily" took it, but if that is your POV then YMMV. Mine is that they had little option and the current court case would indicate that plenty of others consider that there are issues that need to be answered.

Anyway, I shared this in case anyone wanted to share the multitudes of problematic experiences I read about here. Surely anything that contributes to a groundswell of public opinion that may in turn bring about change is worthwhile. That's the last I have to contribute.

Do you know what a VR is? Yes, the people who took a VR did all happily take it. There is no court case with check-in staff.
To add to that NO VR's were even offered to call centre staff, they all had to work and couldn't take the money and run.

Not everyone is a moron. I in fact have a PhD in a related area, so yes I do know what a VR is, seriously . I also know that many times people are left with no option and the word 'voluntary' is corporate double speak which in no way represents the reality faced by the worker.

Crikey doesn't charge anywhere near as much for its content as other news sources. Even academic journals charge readers whilst obtaining content from authors who are paid nothing. That's not even mentioning the Murdoch press and their ilk. I see no argument of value on that point.

But anyway we are most likely on different sides of the divide and being as I said I was going to make no further comment, I will not try to restrain myself better from hereon in. As I said, I simply shared the link in case anyone wanted to share their stories with a wider audience. If not, there is no need to do anything other than scroll on.

Have you been to sydney terminal 3 recently. Utter chaos... but I guess if it's not on the tv it doesn't exist?

VR actually makes it worse, because VR means you can't replace those positions. I guess that's reflected in the pathetic check in experiences due to lack of staff.

Aside: you seem to have a very optimistic, perhaps naïve, view of VR. I especially loved the VR where if they didn't take it, and didn't find redeployment in 3 months they lost all of the VR benefits and got sacked. So voluntary: take this money now, or try to find another position when we don't want you here and get nothing.

Here we go again with the experts who haven't been in that specific situation but telling the people who have been in that specific situation how it was.
Please don't give the me rubbish how they are not being staffed or people are not coming in to the business, that's complete rubbish, there have been literally hundreds of new checkin staff over the past 8-10 months with even more coming in.
And please don't lecture me saying that the people that took the VRs didn't want out. Staff in SYD were actually denied a VR becuase they were oversubscribed in the people who wanted to take it voluntarily.

“Dear employee, we are asking you to volunteer to go into this lifeboat. It’s a very nice lifeboat. If you don’t volunteer to go on the lifeboat then you know that there are other ways of lightening the load of the ship.”

But seriously, isn’t the fact that the VRs were oversubscribed an indictment on the company in self?

I think the issue here is the rose coloured glasses.
To say other people haven't been in industrial employment situations across a wide range of industries doesn't really match reality. Certainly the idea that someone can't know how VR is used and abused because they didn't work at qantas is dubious.
Your sydney example is an exception, it doesn't disprove other comments. It's an exception.

BTW, I've seen VR undersubscribed where people didn't get the VR, because the people who volunteered were good employees who wanted out of a bad business. The dead wood did not volunteer.

We are talking about Qantas and how the article is incorrect about sacking check-in staff, that never happened.
To then be told different by others here is just wrong.
