Usually, I open a thread and provide commentary on the First Cricket Test as I am a regular attendee of Days 1 to 3 at the Qld Cricketers Club. Because of the untimely death of Phillip Hughes, this years First Test has been moved to Adelaide and I can't change my working life to get there instead. Going to the Qld Cricketers Club and watching it on their newly installed 6 screens just didn't excite me the same way. I feel strange, almost like I am missing seeing a friend and mourn the loss.

With the (Second) Test now being held in Brisbane from Wednesday 17th to 21st December, it has also seriously dented my ability to attend - for the first time in over 25 years, I won't be there on the first day of the Brisbane Test (and now will only be there on Day 4 [Saturday]).

I look forward to at least posting score updates, pitch reports, beer consumption and of course, the photos of the meal in The Sir Donald Bradman (Dining) Room.

But for now, over to the Adelaide Test. Day 1 appears to be a cracker - the start we all wanted (Pup winning the toss - he celebrated) and chose to bat (who wouldn't on the pitch prepared!). Warner has come out swinging like a man possessed (or maybe he is still in 1 day mode) and by tea, Australia is 2/238.

What is concerning is that Clarke has retired hurt.

Australia 205/2 MJ Clarke 60* (83b 9x4)

43.2 I Sharma to Clarke, no run, goes short and slides it down leg, Clarke doesn't bother with it. Clarke's doing a lot of stretching now, that back its always a worry for him. He's calling for the physio. Looks to be grimacing quite a bit. Is he walking off, yes. Clarke is walking off the field., shaking his head. Looks to be a spasm.

MJ Clarke retired hurt 60 (84b 9x4 0x6) SR: 71.42

Data points (courtesy of statsguru):

2: No batsman has ever retired hurt more than 3 times in their career...will Clarke give that a nudge?
5: Number of Test centuries Warner has scored in his previous 10 innings
23: Number of consecutive Tests that a team winning the toss has batted at Adelaide

Warner is leading the world for 2014 Test opening batsmen averages

Damn, Warner out!!

56.2
KV Sharma to Warner, OUT, runs down the track and he's holed out at deep midwicket. Karn looks up to the sky and in celebration of his wicket. Walks away to a standing ovation as he raises his bat to them and to his partner. Falls on his own sword as he tries to establish Australia's dominance. Wasn't quite to the pitch and the he struck the ball a little too high on the bat
DA Warner c I Sharma b KV Sharma 145 (253m 163b 19x4 0x6) SR: 88.95

It is concerning the Clarke is injured but even so I believe he still had to play. Just hope he hasn't done any (more) permanent damage. His back must be quite degenerative.

I'm guessing guests need to attend with you, otherwise I'd have certainly gone to the QCC for you :p

I remember this time last year I was there too, sat in some other members section, was good fun :)

Thanks for the updates. I look forward to reading more. I love going to the cricket but due to family issues it's been a couple of years since I last went. The last game I attended was Adam Gilchrist's last 1day game at the MCG. I'm hoping to get to some of the World Cup games played in Melbourne.

I'm glad we won the toss and are batting well. I hope Clarke is able to come back.

I look forward to hearing about the atmosphere and facilities at the Brisbane test.

Smith just got his 50 (now 52) and Mitchell Marsh is 35 n.o., so Australia are 3/323 (well, 4 really as Clarkey isn't likely to come back to bat). Makes his average better anyway (being a n.o. score)

Current partnership 65. Looking good :D

I'll be in the slightly more demure atmosphere in the QCC Members area, but we are next to where the kids sit and the "Okker" men with their beer ladies. There's always something going on over there

80 overs down and we're 3/326.

But will it do him any good - the first one didn't...
10 runs in that first over with the new ball. Suited us well. Looking at 350+ runs for the first day without too many wickets lost, so a pretty good day 1.

Damn...now 4/345

84.2
Aaron to Marsh, OUT, taken at gully and Kohli throws the ball high up in the air. Extra bounce gets rid of Marsh. Tight line just outside off to force the batsman to push and the variation that a new cherry provides takes care of the rest. India desperately needed that
MR Marsh c Kohli b Aaron 41 (87b 5x4 0x6) SR: 47.12

Nathan Lyon in as nightwatchman

No, you jinxed this wicket

87.3
Mohammed Shami to Lyon, OUT, through him! Shami has made an important break. It was a good length ball targeting middle. Lyon did not move forward enough to counter the ball moving back in and it takes an inside edge, gets the top flap of the pad and hits timber
NM Lyon b Mohammed Shami 3 (14m 14b 0x4 0x6) SR: 21.42

Now 5/345 (or in reality 6/345 because of Clarke). Smith 72 n.o.

So now Haddin is out there batting.
