G'day Fellow AFFers, it's time for me to have another crack at presenting a TR.

The genesis of this trip came about from a cancelled (Due in part, to a change in employment) 2023 Ashes trip (Old Trafford - Manchester) where Mrs. CM and I had planned to meet up with a mate of ours and his wife in Belfast and fly over to MAN just as we had done in 2013. The original plan booked as far out as possible had us flying EMD-BNE-SYD-HND-HEL-DUB- train to Belfast then BFS-MAN-LHR-SIN and that was a far as I could get us around the planet in J. There were no J cash fares available and Points+Pay is and was nonsense! Cash fares for F at the time were $5500 each from SIN-SYD. So, I decided to chance my luck and call Hobart after identifying that the correct fare class was available from SIN-SYD and respectfully ask that they open 1 or 2 F seats for me. It would have been rude of me, to not accept the 2 seats offered 🤪 I coughed up the 210k points or whatever it was and ~$400 IIRC. This was on a separate PNR to the rest of the trip and ticketed in no time. After having to cancel the original booking I decided to hang on to the 2 F seats and see what happened.

I really didn't want to waste the F seats as I have only previously flown the old QF F on the 747, so I cobbled together an itinerary that would have us back in SIN in time to take advantage of the First-Class booking on QF2.

We ended up with EMD-BNE (Y) QF - BNE-SYD (J) QF - SYD-TPE (J) CI - TPE-HKG (J) CX (Transit) HKG- HND (J) CX - HND-SIN (J) JL - SIN-SYD (F) QF - SYD-BNE (J) QF and the old reality check BNE -EMD (Y) QF. Mrs. CM booked all on Classic Rewards and me, mostly Classic Reward with a couple of cost-effective DSC vouchers used for domestic legs.

There will be a couple of firsts for me on the trip: First time in Taiwan, first time flying China Airlines (CI) and Japan Airlines (JL) 🏆🍾✈️✅
The usual 100km drive to our regional airport EMD and away we go.

We were first in line at check in and proceeded to book our luggage all the way to TPE, however old mate couldn't print my boarding passes for BNE-SYD nor SYD-TPE 🤔 He told me he could see both seats, but they were locked, and he couldn't do anything. Just go to the service desk in BNE and they will sort it out.
After a typically boring flight down to BNE we got the bus from remote stand, and I went straight to the service desk at Gate 1. They couldn't assist as they are QantasLink. Try the lounge they said, then the lounge sent me to service desk at Gate 23. Ahh, Mr. CM we think your J seats to SYD have been oversold and there is no guarantee you will get them. She then looks at her colleague and says I can actually print boarding passes out. Gives us 1D & 1F and says we will call you in the lounge once we know what's going on and by the way you can only get your CI boarding passes at CI SYD check in. Off to the Dom J QP we go. Boarding was called 90 minutes later and after zero communication from QF we were seated in 1D & 1F. I noticed 3 x QF staff in the J cabin so maybe they bumped someone else off.

Anyway, after another long-winded intro from me let's go!

Cheese & Crackers is about as good as it gets in the EMD QP 🙈

Typical catering on this leg. There was a light load so I selected a seat each for us so we could relax on the mighty Dash 8.

Landed in a stormy looking BNE.

20230807_131314.jpg

Bussed across to the terminal as happens 8/10 times.

After chasing up the service desk/s we sat down to relax and have a small bite to eat and maybe a glass of red 🍷

The Lasagna was tasty enough.

20230807_140145.jpg

They must have been short of mince this week 🫣

20230807_140629.jpg

Righto, let's get down to SYD and get CI boarding passes sorted.

We left 23 minutes late and landed 4 minutes early. Good result.

Familiar site to many and we're on our way.

Relaxing flight down to SYD and now actually starting to feel like we're on holidays after an early start out home.

The chicken and corn soup was very decent. The wife went with the cheese plate. Didn't want to overdo it with all that was in front of us.

20230807_155350.jpg
And just like that we were in Sydney.

With no boarding passes available we got through to the Gate 15 transfer bus off the back of my baggage receipt.

Transferred across to the INT terminal on a very full bus.

So, a rookie error from me 🙈 we get to the China Airlines check in at 17.30 and with a 22.10 departure, of course they're not open yet 🤡 duh!
Head over to food court to kill an hour or so and 3 Asahis, a Pepsi-Max and Hot chocolate later I've already dropped $57 🤫 How long's this been going on I ask. Doesn't everyone use a Lounge? 😜 Head back over to check in around 18.50 and they have just opened. Straight up to J counter and in FLounge 15 minutes later.

Mrs. CM was decidedly pleased for only her third visit to this lounge.

F1.jpg

Pretty quiet tonight.

F3.jpg

F4.jpg

Still time for a few Sherbets 🍾🥂

F5.jpg

Have passport, will travel ✈️🌏 The service was attentive and on point tonight.

F2.jpg

The Salt & Pepper squid was a bit of let down IMO. Have had far better. Still, it was cheaper than the food court!

F6.jpg

Mrs. CM ran with the 8-hour Beef brisket with potato puree and tarragon & shallot butter. She enjoyed this serve.

F7.jpg

For me: The Gua bao with braised lamb, chilli paste, sesame and pickles. A nice little bite and very enjoyable.

F8.jpg

F9.jpg

Slowly getting closer to boarding, so we just chilled and enjoyed a few more glasses of Pommery for the bride and the Taittinger for me 🥂

And we're off 😉

20230807_213326.jpg

Reasonable J Cabin and pretty sure the main J cabin at least, was 100% full by the time we departed.

20230807_213700.jpg

A couple of happy kids 😜

20230807_214010.jpg

I don't think we were offered a PDB or if we were it, was only water. Also, I believe this is the only international J flight I've ever taken where there is no amenity kit supplied 🤔 Like, really!

Post Departure Beverage & Snack supplied.

20230807_224200.jpg

We both had the Peking Duck slice with Prawn (as in not plural 😜) and shaved cucumber for our appetiser 🦆🦐 and as we were full from the Flounge we took a second appetiser of Creamy Pumpkin Soup instead of a main which was miniscule but very nice.

20230807_225211.jpg

Here is what was available had we not been chockers.

20230807_214900.jpg

Managed to grab maybe 3 hours sleep before getting myself together and watching a movie (The Covenant) which was very good. This was leading into, during and after breakfast.

For breakfast Mrs. CM went Western as usual 😂 it was a fairly large serving. She was happy enough with it.

20230808_030516.jpg

20230807_214904.jpg

Chinese for me:

20230808_031212.jpg

Landed about 30 minutes early. Deplaned and headed for immigration.

Whoops!

20230808_053019.jpg

Immigration took probably 30 minutes as there was only 2 booths open for foreigners. The process sped up a wee bit when all the locals were processed, and they opened more lines. We were required to scan both index fingers as part of the process. I asked about e-Gates and got conflicting answers. First person told me yes, we could, if were registered and had our fingerprints already done and the second person, I asked looked at me blankly and said no. So, I'm not sure I can enlighten anyone. Anyway, we're in Taipei, that's all that matters. @Matt_01 had given me instructions on how to use the MRT (paying by Easycard) into the CBD, but I was fairly knackered and ended up talking a taxi driver down to ~TWD$1000/AUD$50 to take us straight to the accommodation which was the Leofoo Residences situated very close to the Zhongshan MRT Station. Once again, suggested by @Matt_01. So, thank you to him for his sage advice.

All in all, a decent hard and soft product. Service was efficient but not particularly engaging. Sort of IME, CX like from my pre-Covid flights with them.

So due to an early arrival we had bugger all traffic to contend with on the taxi ride into our accommodation. The driver was engaging and very pleasant, and the trip took ~40 minutes. We checked in and then proceeded to the 4th floor to unpack and have a shower and grab a nap to freshen up.

No pokey hallways here. Exit the lift and there are only 4 apartments per level with nice big doors.

As you walk in you quickly realise this place has everything you need.

Microwave, Coffee Machine, 2 Burner Hotplate, Fridge, Kettle, Cutlery, Wine Glasses etc:

A roll out table and stools:

Iron & Ironing Board, multiple sets of slippers.

Combo Washer/Dryer in the very large bathroom. We took advantage of this on the last night and before we left and headed off with clean kit.

L7.jpg

Decent size lounge room as well.

Leofoo Residences continued - 106 Taipei No. 38, Section 1, Nanking East Road

Leofoo Residences is situated just a 5-minute walk from Zhongshan MRT Station, which is just a stop away from the Taipei Main Station.

I believe the bed was a Super King because it was bigger than our KS back home.

1.jpg

Good Wi-Fi and a desk for me to work at.

2.jpg

3.jpg

Ridiculous amounts of storage: There are 2 of these in the unit.

4.jpg

Huge bathroom:

5.jpg

I was hoping for time to have a relaxing soak, but it never ended up happening ☹️

6.jpg

Twin vanities to stop any blueing 😉 you can see the washer to the right of here tucked out of the road.

7.jpg

Took me a few goes to work out some of the functions on this fancy coughter 👀

8.jpg

Nice little balcony out the front of the unit facing the main road. If you chose to sit in the provided chairs, you couldn't see anything as it was a solid wall. I would step out there in the arvo for 2 quick beers standing up and just watch the world go by in the warm and humid environment. Luckily, we are from Central Queensland a dry heat type of place normally, but the weather here reminded us of places like Mackay, Townsville and Cairns where we have spent lots of time. So, all in all no issues with the conditions.

This hotel, as suggested up thread was recommended to me by @Matt_01. I booked it through Qantas Hotels at 3 QFF Points per Dollar.
I also used my PC+ $100 Voucher to lessen the blow 🤫 I believe it was extremely good value allowing for everything that was provided and the location.

They normally hand them out, you didn't miss out on much and this is what they look like. That being said I will be looking forward to your TR.

I completely forgot to mention that we received a pair of slippers each. Did you get the slippers with the amenity kit?

I had booked the night prior to us arriving so that we could just lob up and have a shower and a quick kip to freshen up. Normal check in at this establishment was 3pm. So, by about midday, we were good to get on shanks pony and start wandering around and exploring the Zhongshan District of Taipei.

Off for a walk and turned left at the entrance of the apartment building.

Some random shots of the local neighbourhood:

T1.jpg

No shortage of Mopeds / Scooters around here 🛵😜

And they're off and racing in the Local Scooter GP 🏁

T7.jpg

Went to Uncle Tetsu's to have Ramen for lunch and they said they were an all you can eat turn out and they had no time slots left. I'm looking around and there were at least 4 tables left 🤔 Maybe they don't like beards! More likely they were getting near closing time but wasn't 100% translating through Google. Anyway, we found this joint in the next alley over who were happy to accommodate us ✌️

Aoba Restaurant: Photo from the net.

Aoba Taipei.jpg

From memory we ordered:

Pork Belly in a soy sauce, Smoked Chicken and fried rice. Just a nice easy start.
The chicken wasn't smoke flavoured and may have been a translation for Barbequed.
No complaints with the food, we enjoyed the Chinese tea 🫖 and the service was good.

A1.jpg

The local brew was Gold Medal Taiwan Beer. It was ok. The funny thing was the really small glass supplied to drink a big bottle 😉🍺

A2.jpg

Nice easy start to our first day in Taiwan 🇹🇼

Like a lot of Asian cities, the juxtaposition of big new skyscrapers and old buildings.

20230808_150205.jpg

The local Fire Brigade 🚒 The ladder truck looks like it would have quite some reach on it. Most likely essential in a high rise environment.

Something different to home. Well duh, that's why we travel 🍗

Addictive Green Pepper Crispy Chicken with Scallions (Spring Onions) & Spicy Sesame Sauce

Warning ☢️🚫 Do not eat this or you may sink!

I asked my sons partner, who is Taiwanese, about the 'quicksand' stuffing. She said that is a type of egg yolk mixture.

Thank you @OZDUCK we had no idea at all 😉

There was also another funny one which I haven't seen any dentist recommend recently. Maybe good for the teeth but not liver :p

When sailing in Malaysia and Thailand, our standard crew order is several of those large bottles of beer (or a tower of Tiger with in-built cooling system  ) plus an ice bucket to keep bottles cool. Supplied glasses are small like your example and more often than not, stamped with eg Asahi, Tiger, Heinekin, Carlsberg etc.
Sort of like ordering a jug of beer with your mates in north Queensland and drinking from a pony glass (~140ml)
