COVID-19 and Tennis

Basically realistically he’d only be able to go through on two of the exemption criteria - covid in last 6 months or proven substantiated allergy….

Apparently Morrison will have Novac return on next flight if his exemption paperwork doesn’t meet requirements. 🤞
Let’s wait and see what actually happens rather than relying on the announcement.

Novak Djokovic has landed in Australia but faced an extraordinary visa drama threatening to end his grand slam hopes.

The world number one touched down on a Emirates flight from Dubai shortly after 11pm Wednesday night AEST.

However, late on Wednesday evening it emerged that Djokovic was seeking to enter Australia on a work visa, which doesn’t permit medical exemptions for being unvaccinated and requires the support of the Victorian government.

Acting Sports and Major Events Minister Jaala Pulford tweeted at 11.14pm that the state government would not support the application.

“The Federal Government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic’s visa application to enter Australia,” she said.

“We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual visa application support to participate in the 2022 Australian Open Grand Slam.

“We’ve always been clear on two points: visa approvals are a matter for the Federal Government, and medical exemptions a matter for doctors.”

Border Force officials have the discretion to allow Djokovic into the country in spite of the Victorian government move however is fate is still unclear.

A government source told the Herald Sun “they may have to send him or put him in immigration detention.”

As of this morning Djokovic has been detained.

Tennis Australia has short term memory loss.

Tennis Australia saying “its not up to me, or the pM ,or any other politician to determine whether or not he can play”

Surely they remember the Asylum seekers during the Abbott stop the boats era who said Drs should be the ones who decide if someone can come into the country. That did not end well with the electorate even though it became law for a while.

10stars for @antycbr who pointed out that he had to be sponsored on a working visa. And the someone in the state govt probably supported his visa. Did Chairman Dan knock it on the head after seeing the immense public pushback? - all this just as Djokovic was en-route.

TA probably got told through official channels away from the public gaze that Djokovic was not going to be granted a visa. Then they thought a press conference, telling everyone the Govt has no right to refuse entry cos a panel of Drs said he can come in, and get Djokovic to just arrive would put public pressure on the Govt to give him a visa. Well it just blew up in their faces.

I actually don’t think there should be a problem if someone is not vaccinated and wants to enter the country.
But it’s the way TA went about the whole thing and trying to strongarm the Federal Govt and Minister who has the final say that just does not gel with the community.

Those in power don’t realise that Australians don’t care about the rich and famous. They just want the same rules for everyone.

Is this more entertainment than the tennis or what!!…

Loving life right now *chews on unsalted non buttered popcorn*

If the Feds let him in they are TOAST.

Meanwhile Novaks dad tries to pull a Donald Trump and what storm Canberra if he gets shipped out? Seriously?

Apple didn’t fall too far from the tree.

The Victorian government said it will not support Djokovic's application, putting his fate completely in the hands of the federal government and Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Will he be placed in a detention centre in the interim?
He has to go into a controlled hotel I believe as his vaccination status hasn't been confirmed. But I also heard the court would be convened this morning.

I think Novaks Dad should be charged with incitement as well while they are at it.

He’s trying to rev up the anti vaxxers (who took a well earned holiday from pointless protesting) to storm the streets…
