COVID-19 and Tennis

Yes I once missed most of a Serena set because at the end of the previous match I needed to go to the ladies'. Huge queue there and then another huge line to get back in to the stadium. Too many people trying to get in in the time allowed between games, so had to wait till the next break between games. And the video screen at that door wasn't working so couldn't even watch what was going on by video. I think that was the last time I bothered trying to go to the AO in person. It was so congested it wasn't enjoyable.

About four years ago we experienced a significant crush waiting to go into the next night session. So much so that people were fainting in the crush - there was no room to move at all - the ambulance and security demanded that the doors be opened immediately. I don't know what the delay in opening was, many didn't get in to see the start of the night match as a result and the previous match had ended long before. Mid summer, hot day - what go possibly go wrong. 🤷‍♀️

how rude was Medddevvvevvev during the Virgin CEO’s speech though.
I didn't think he was that rude. His troll at the end was priceless though. "last but not least...I'd like to thank my team again" - I was laughing hysterically on the couch at that one!

As for Ms Hrdlicka - look, read the room. She did not need to waffle on and on like she did - 5.5 hours on court for the two sportsmen. This presentation is about the players, not you or your team. Even the bloke from KIA gave her a little serve for it...starting his little speech with "I'll be very brief"

I think I’m just getting old.
Think I’ll download some old episodes of Grumpy Old Men/Women today.
No doubt we can revive the thread around Oct 22 when we decide - or not - to get tickets.
Of course our memories are short and I will probably read all my threads and still go!
Let’s hope it is renamed COVID-19 and Tennis

I understood the etiquette was to applaud both players winners/passing shots, rather than applauding an unfavoured player's missed shots/volleys into the net. The only exception was for long rallies (say 20+ shots).
Sure but I'll think you'll find its the 21st century and most people don't go to finishing school to learn etiquette any more. Above all I'm confident Medvedev himself didn't.

Not sure that antisocial crowd behaviour (screaming swearing derogatory comments about other patrons) equates to a failure of etiquette and should not be (but is) tolerated.

Hey he was just mimicking what I was doing on the couch...
Many senior leadership types tend to speak that metronomic monotone these days - it’s almost like self-auto correct . I think there must be a course they go to.
To be fair she said more in the two speeches for Womens/Men’s Finals that in the entire previous fortnight. Think the 80:20 rule got mixed up….

There used to be violent clashes between the Serbian and Croatian fans at the tennis. Same same but different.
Greeks were always out in force when baghdatis was around too. Certainly after the trouble in the mid 2000s the changes made to entry requirements etc had an effect

A hypothesis in circulation is that poor crowd behaviour is because after multiple lockdowns people have forgotten how to behave in public. If that's true anywhere I guess it would be true in Melbourne.

I think it's also the case with dress as well, as a general comment not just at the tennis.

Reported rumour/speculation that Djokovic will get vaccinated

After all this time people would want to see the needle go in (twice/thrice), and even then some will just think it’s just saline
