Every year my local TA has given me a policy with covermore at close to 50% off (their commission) to keep my business.

However this time round they are trying to sayt heir commission structure has changed and they barely even make 10%... does this sound right?

What level of cover?

Not it doesn't sound right. I think on average agents receive between 30 to 40% commission from travel insurance policies so if they were on 40% you would be receiving 20% off the cost of your policy.

Sounds to me it's more like their management structure has changed & the boss doesn't want to give anything away yet still pocket up to the 40% they receive from the insurance company.

If it's true the travel agent should be looking for a better deal elsewhere however that still doesn't help you.

Are you sure it's not worth getting the 'free' annual policy through Amex with their $900.00 Platinum charge card offer & receive the 75,000 QF ff points to boot?

There are 3 kinds of policy - Options, Travelsure and Essentials. Which one is it you are looking at

Options.

I've got coverage from an array of platinum cards I can book with (except amex plat), however there is provision in my contract for work to pay for an annual policy so I'm going to have it as a backup.

10% coms hardly sounds like it's worth them selling....

Exactly. That's why I'm a bit suss about their story. I've got a feeling there may not be as much commission earned for annual policies however the insurance company obviously gave them enough commission that they could pass a discount on to you last time.

Wonder if you would get a discount going direct to the insurance company.

If it's Options then I think they are telling you porkies trippin_the_rift.

How does the premium the TA quoted you compare to what you can get online?
