Couples & Voluntary Cabin Separation

Planned a RTW trip in F last year involving a few airlines. +1 came along and decided to join. Managed to get 2xF and 2xJ flights for +1 and inform the intention of moving the J to F when more award seats are released (if any). +1 insisted that its all the same and is happy even in Y (). Blessing to my point balance but couldn't get pass my conscienc

I think you make a mountain out of a mole hill MEL - I never said pax visit for a drink - I never said they bring HL either - they simply swap seats for half the journey - makes little or no difference - you will still get fed and watered - one pax standing up and walking to back of cabin as other half walks in would not disturb a sleeping mouse so I am at a loss to know how that would disrupt the amenity of the cabin - most I have seen swap back before landing - so that is 2 x 2 pax 5 second movements - you sleep all the way you said so if they tippy toe they should not disturb you.

I would love to know how it could cause a security risk? Can you Pauline that for me pls? ;)

Amenity of the cabin is disturbed as people come and go. And if the second person arrives and decides they want to drink and eat from the Fcl menu, there is activity in the cabin caused by the new guest that may otherwise not have occurred had the original occupant been resting or sleeping.

Security - a fairly straightforward notion. Additional passengers moving in and out of the cabin leads to an increased opportunity for theft, and potentially more difficult to identify the culprit (slightly easier to find out what's been going on if there's only one other passenger rather than two or three moving in and out). While rare, cases of theft from hand baggage during flights in Asia is not unheard of:

First class cabins are about amenity and privacy. Doubling the activity in the cabin because the new entrant wants all the bells and whistles doesn't usually add to the amenity. What if I want the last dessert which is taken by the new passenger?

i found a fabulous rare reward (award?) seat in J, Qantas - Melbourne to LAX - just one seat was available and whilst my husband at first said, "take it" i knew he didn't mean it.
I didn't take it although I did complain LOUDLY.

later 2 seats came up flying American from Sydney to LAX so a war was avoided. but only just ;)

I thought it was usually the wife whose utterances have a opposite meaning....:D:D

If you are flying in from MEL-SYD to connect to AA72, just make sure you leave plenty of time connecting between SYD Domestic T3 and International T1. There is a bus you have to catch....

funny you should mention this.....originally i had just one hour between those flights and woke up suddenly and thought how horrendously stressful it will be on the day, particularly since we need to be in Los Angles the following day. So i called up AA (booked though my AA account) and they were able to change the booking to leave us two hours inbetween flights, which hopefully should be enough as cases are checked right through at least) AND, they didn't charge me a cancellation fee for the MEL-SYD ticket.

by the way, when i called Qantas, they said that the one hour should be ok, but that two would be much less stressful

I had a 55 minutes dom-int connection at Sydney before and assured that it is enough to make the connection. When i got to Sydney international terminal (transfer bus from domestic), my jaw dropped seeing the line through security. Had to wait for about 15mins even on the Express lane *sweat* and a quick dash to the gate.

For SYD DOM-INT:

1 hour is impossible
2 hours is Ok
3 hours = time to relax in J lounge. Don't forget the Qantas J lounge!!!

We had a schedule change pop up last week that left us with a 1 hour connection in Sydney (DOM-INT). Phone rep says its legal but now way would I want to risk it. She was happy to move me to an earlier flight.

i think we'll still have time to get to the J Lounge- I've had two hours inbetween domestic and international flights before (not in Aus) and i've always had time to kill.

And if DOM-INT misconnection occurs you will have to connect via SFO (QF73) or DFW (QF8). Or wait another day.

I don't even want to contemplate this ......making my tummy feel very nervous

and what happens then with J seats?

how much earlier?

will our cases be checked straight through?

J seating is not guaranteed in event of misconnection. They may offer you PE or Y. If you take it the refund will be the difference between what you paid for J and the price of FULLFARE economy as priced on the day!!!. The refund will be small.

Yes if flights are on the one booking.
No if flights on two separate bookings after 31 August 2016.

Actually this is completely off topic.

Should be under "Your questions". Maybe a Mod can move post #45 to this one to "Your Questions"

1 hour is doable if you don't just miss the transit bus, and it's only running every 20 or 30 minutes. I've done 75 minutes, complete with a quick champagne in the FLounge.

Maz1,

I have condensed some of your replies.

AFF has an ability to 'multi-quote'. That is, you can select a number of posts to quote in the one reply.

At the bottom-right of each post is a symbol with a quotation mark and + sign:

llTmg7f.png

Click on that and a tick will appear:

When you have selected all the posts you wish to include in your reply, then click 'Reply With Quote' and all the posts selected will appear in the one message - ready for your input.

Using the multi-quote facility aids readability, and avoids any concern that a member may be 'post padding' to increase their post count.

Anyone after page two on the monthly totals is unlikely to be "padding" their post count. Not that the page one people would :rolleyes:

Oh what I gave just done with this post :D

Happy wandering

As others have said - I imagine it could be quite common where work pays for premium but the partner decides to accompany for the holiday (but chooses to save money in the lower cabin).

Yes, this would be common. In general, if I had work responsibilities immediately on landing from long haul that required me to be well rested (the main point behind flying business class), I would take the J seat. If not, I would give it up for the better half. I reckon it would be about a 50/50 split under this scenario. So often I would be the one arriving feeling like cr*p but with a happy partner

Whoa. Asshole much.

Wimbledon-based businessman Arrun Kumar doesn’t seem to feel ashamed for travelling up-front either. “In my opinion, everyone should travel this way. I think first-class is really rather wonderful — the only way to fly,” he told the newspaper. His wife Tina, however, doesn’t get a look-in. Whenever Arrun travels overseas for work, the couple tag a holiday on to the end of his meetings, but Tina always sits in economy. 'While I've loved the rare times I've flown with him, it's difficult to justify it financially. After all, it's his company, his profits. That's why we end up buying me an economy ticket. Sometimes I get upgraded. Usually I don't.”

Not quite the same thing, but I was in J on a QF trans-Tasman flight last year and a young Chinese lady was sitting in 1F. Her father had a boarding pass for row 25 or something. The father took the J seat leaving the daughter to fly in his Y seat.

I'm not sure of the exact circumstances, or how much say the daughter had in this decision...

Last time I checked what's his is mine, and what's mine is mine :D

In all seriousness though, that's a bit rough. What's good for the goose is good for the gander IMO. However, if one gets upgraded and the other is stuck in Y so be it - just share the love.

While I enjoy flying with a significant other, tbh I like my alone time and if the only alone time I get is one the flight there/back then I'mma take it!
